Hooked on Dutton

LAST EDITED ON Aug-26-19 AT 11:49PM (MST)[p]My dad, as a NR, drew the archery elk tag 3 years ago. I was with him most of the hunt and had a great time. He was 69 years old at the time. We seen some nice bulls, nothing cover magazine material, but it was adventure hunt that I enjoyed immensely.

With 9 points I hope to get there some day. I guess where I'm going with this is has anyone had any success so far on the unforgiving ?rock?? Would be cool to see some pics and hear some stories, regardless of a punched tag.

I have hunted the Dutton for almost two decades. It is by far my favorite mountain to hunt. I drew in 2014 for archery. Because of work my scouting was limited. I found a few good bulls. Opening weekend I saw lots of small bulls and cows. I had to return to work on Tuesday. I went back up the second weekend and it was poring rain Saturday morning the fog set in and I was unable to glass the high stuff. So I decided to drop to the lower country where I had a trail cam on a creek and saw some nice bulls. I walked a crossed the ridge and on my way back up the other side I caught my bull in his bed at 15 yards. My shot was a touch high had good blood but I ended up loosing it after about 300 yards. My buddy and I went back up the next morning I spent hours on my hands and knees looking for blood. I decided to walk into the pines in the direction of his last blood and lucked into some blood on some deadfall. Tracked the blood 50 yards and there he was. He had bedded 60 yards up hill from where I spent hours looking for blood. By far the most exciting and crazy hunt I have ever had. I will be applying again for he Dutton next year. Good luck!
