Hunting bear GMU 17

My wife has a hunt in NM GMU vunit 17 and I was wondering about hunting bear? Rifle? Muzzleloader? I seen alot of bear sign and spook one out last year...wouldn't mind getting one without dogs this might be the opportunity. I know that it is just bow and smokepole in this unit at the time of her elk hunt, is rifle permitted or no?

Unit 17 is bow only with no dogs allowed for bear from September 1-24. August 16-31 and Sept 25-Nov 30 is any weapon. Check page 50-51 of the proclamation. You can get on the G&F website. FYI, you have to by your bear license 2 days prior to hunting.
