I agree with everything these guys have said about the deer. HOWEVER (personal only), I've done this long enough that sometimes I'm in a "look" mode rather than a "shoot" mode.
I may not have shot him....depends on my attitude. (My attitude is always shoot if he's a true GIANT.)
This year, I had a buck at about 200 yds. He was broadside and I had the crosshairs on his chest with the safety off. All I did was say, "bang, you're dead". He was a heavy-antlered 4x4 with good tine length and deep forks. He was approx. 28" wide. My guess is he would have scored about 180 to 185.
I shot a smaller one three days later. Both times my son was with me and he could see both deer. Why did I WANT to shoot the 2nd time and not the first......don't have a clue! I understand why I sometimes wait....I don't know what "flips" the switch to "today is the day".
