I was handed down a 30-06 JC Higgins rifle with a mauser action on it, it was originally purchased at Sears back in the day when they sold guns. What are your opinions on this rifle?

It is probably a Model 50 I bet. I have one also. It is a good solid Mauser 98 action. pm me. mtmuley

My father-in-law has one and it is a tack driver. He has killed a pile of mule deer with it. His is a plain jane and a bit on the heavy side. It is a shooter however.

I also have a JC higgins 30-06. I believe it is Model 54. It looks like a model 70 with swinging safety. However, I have read that it was manufactured by several gun makers and I don't know the actual manufacturer of my rifle. The wood is very non-fancy and it has seen some action, but it is very accurate. Killed my two best mule deer with it. Wood stock is short and it works best for me with the slip on recoil pad to add some length to the stock.
