looking at trying a diy hunt in south
western kansas for whitetails anyone
have any info of public land or if this
is worth trying

You will find it harder to draw a tag in that area than in the eastern half of the state.

The vast majority of Kansas is private land. Like the above post said, it's tough to draw a tag and when you do it's tough to find land to hunt. They do have a "walk in" program but sometimes that land can be pretty sparsely covered. Southwestern Kansas is home to some pretty big mule deer as well. We hunt pheasants down by Garden City and I haven't hunted any public ground yet. Good Luck.

It's always an adventure!!!

There is the Cimarron Nat'l grasslands that makes the SW county in the state almosty half public. With walk-in it is probably 2/3 public. Very open country. Look for CRP and you will find deer. A decoy can work wonders there. If you have CRP and feed you can find whitetails many miles from any trees. We have killed some nice deer by using a decoy. It really helps if you have two people.
