Here are a few images of the buck I shot last evening.
I had missed a descent buck on the east side Saturday
and could not find one to shoot at Sunday mourning.
I was pretty much thinking my Blacktail would have to come from Oregon this year.
We decided to make one last try on some property we have been seeing some nice bucks on. There were three bucks I had seen earlier in the season that I told my wife if I saw one of those I would take him.
We got to the property a couple minute after 6:00, yes we were late. My partner decided to sit on top of a flat that we have taken two bucks off of this year. I said well I will walk down the road that runs the ridge line and circle back up towards him.
I walked down the ridge over to look off the edge and saw zero deer. I continued to sneak down the dirt road hoping to catch something crossing. It was getting dark fast so it was really difficult to stay focused on stealth.
As I rounded a bend I caught a deers rear end out in front of me. I pulled up my binoculars to see this buck right on the edge of the thick trees and brush. I knew right away he was a shooter. His vitals where obscured by an oak tree, so all I could see was his rear hams and from the brisket forward. No time for a rest and he was looking right at me. I knelt down and put the cross hair right on the base of his neck. Boom, nothing happened he was still stairing right at me. I thought dare I try for a rest on the oak tree about 15 feet away. I have seen how fast these bucks disappear so I said just hold steady and try again. I brought the cross hair to rest on his neck again, boom he disappeared from the scope view. I thought either I hit him or he is gone into the thick stuff. After I covered the 115 steps to were he was I found him 3 feet behind the tree that blocked his vitals. One bullet hole right in the neck 3 inches below his chin.
I looked at my watch 6:28 I had about 20 minutes left in the season when I took this buck. I would rather be lucky than good any day. I cannot figure out why he did not move a mussel after the first shot.
Oh yea this is not one of the bucks I had seen earlier in the season.
The group I hunt with did ok the last six days of season we harvested 6 bucks and missed 3 others.
Sorry about the tongue out his neck was broken and I could not get the dang thing to stay in his mouth.
