A 7-year-old girl was struck by a stray bullet from a gun fired by a man arguing after a basketball game Thursday, one of at least six overnight shootings in Chicago that left one dead and seven people wounded.

The girl was shot about 7:10 p.m. in the Golden Gate neighborhood, just west of the Altgeld Gardens on the Far South Side, in the 13200 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue.

Two men were playing basketball nearby and started arguing when one grabbed a gun and opened fire, police said, hitting the child in the thigh but missing the apparent target.

The girl is in good condition at Metro South Medical Center, police said.

About the same time, three men in a Jeep Cherokee were shot, one fatally, in the 600 block of West 115th Street in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side. The three were driven to Roseland Hospital after someone shot up their truck.

They were eastbound on 115th Street and pulled up to a stop sign when someone inside a dark sedan pulled alongside and opened fire, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

A 29-year-old man died after getting shot in the back and leg, a 30-year-old man was shot in the right elbow and a third man, 30, suffered a graze wound to the head, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.

The dead man was in the front passenger seat, Alfaro said. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified him as Lamont Coleman, of the 300 block of West 116th Street. He was pronounced dead at 7:39 p.m., a spokeswoman said.

The driver was the 30-year-old man struck in the right elbow and the other man was in the back seat.

An 18-year-old man was also shot, about 8:16 p.m., in the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The shooter was walking down an alley in the 2300 block of North Kostner Avenue when he saw the 18-year-old and shot him, Zala said. The victim is in good condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Zala said.

The offender fled on foot. The shooting is gang-related, Zala said.

About 10:20 p.m., a 30-year-old man was shot in the 0-50 block of West 108th Street in the Roseland neighborhood and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, Alfaro said. Additional details about that shooting weren't available.

A 41-year-old man was also shot just after midnight in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The victim, who was standing in the 7000 block of South Chappel Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain, walked into Jackson Park Hospital with a gunshot wound to his knee, News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

About 5 a.m. Friday, a 21-year-old man was shot by someone in a black SUV on the 1600 block of North Lake Shore Drive in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on the North Side. The man was walking -- it's unclear in what direction -- when an SUV carrying four males pulled up alongside and someone inside started shooting, police said, hitting the victim in the ankle.

A "Good Samaritan" brought him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.

I would not be surprised if "gun free" Chicago now ranks number one as the "murder capital" here in the United States. If things would quiet down in Syria, Chicago would be the murder capital of the world. Speaks very loud about Chicago's severe anti-gun laws. Only the criminals have guns.

My dad was born and raised in Roseland (a nice Dutch neighborhood then, near Al Capone's Cicero). Although my dad's house (originally built by his grandfather) and Fenger H.S. (where he attended) still stand, the entire neighborhood now is held hostage by gang warfare. Not a place I'd want to frequent for a night on the town!

Thanks be that my grandparents/parents moved to Arizona from Missouri and Illinois in the '20s and '30s!!!

Besides, not much elk, antelope, mule deer, Coues deer, buffalo, bighorn sheep, mountain lion, black bear, javelina, etc. to hunt on public land in Illinois ...

Obama has to straighten out Bush's mess of 4.6% unemployment and gas at $1.83 a gallon to help these youngsters get jobs! Either that or take some TARP money and start teaching some shooting skills in Chicago! It would be cheaper for the taxpayers and easier on the penal system if these monsters would shoot better.
