I get bored of the tech talk this time of year as I look forward to opening day. To pass the long days post up some of your archery deer kills. Doe, spikes, 2-points, monsters, post them all up to help stop all this day-dreaming. I will start with last years.

This 2008 archery buck was my first with a bow! Awesome hunt, awesome feeling. Here's the story...

Well I got lucky. This is my first archery kill, and it was a sweet hunt. We got busted three times by good sized deer, one a 4x4 about 27" and the other was also a 4x4 just about 25". I ended up with this 3x3 20" wide and I'm ecstatic.

So here's my story... I set up in a cluster of three of four pines in the middle of a long sweeping meadow with about a 20% decline slope on the second day of our hunt. As I looked down into the meadow the wind was whistling briskly in my face. It was 5:50 a.m. and still dark as I sat down. Around 6:30 I was glassing and surprised as I looked down to find a nice looking 3x3 already 1/3 of the way across the meadow in front of me. Like an idiot I had left my rangefinder in my bag and knew I'd be busted if I tried to grab it, also as the deer was walking and eating I figured he would be into the pines on the upper right side of the meadow and gone. As I began to stand up the deer stared in my direction; luckily because of the cold morning breeze I was completely covered in camo. The only thing showing were my eyes. (don't you love camo?!) I froze half way up as my legs began to cramp until the deer put his head down and continued feeding. I then slowly finished standing and again the deer stared in my direction. Again I froze and again after a few seconds the buck put his head down and meandered from left to right.

Because I had no rangefinder handy I decided the only way to range this deer was to use the trusty method of 'pin bracketing'. The animal's chest rested between my 20 and 40 yard pin putting him at 40 yards. So I pulled back aimed at the lower vitals due to the decline and let her fly. 'Thud' was the next sound I heard as the buck turned and ran left were he'd come from and disappeared into the aspen. My heart pounded as I tried to sit and wait, wondering all the while whether the shot had rang true.

After about 20 minutes of agony I waited until I heard several cow chirps coming in my direction from the same general area where the buck had gone. I watched as 23 cow/calf elk came into my meadow and stood at the same area where my deer had been shot, but at around 50 yards. It was all I could do to hold off as I have an elk tag as well. I'm hoping for antlers and not wanting to pack two animals out that day several miles, I held off. Awesome scene!!! Once the elk had wondered away I found my bloody arrow lying 58 yards from my spot in the pines.

Due to the fact that I am new to archery and was unsure of myself I gave it another 30 minutes making it one hour total. Finally the time arrived to look around. To my dismay I found no blood and really started doubting myself. So I decided to walk in the general direction of the where the buck had entered the aspen. To my great satisfaction I found the buck piled up in heap about 60 yards from where he was shot. The arrow flew true and hammered the animal in the sweet spot puncturing both lungs.

This was a hunt to remember and officially solidifies my archery obsession. What a rush and what satisfaction to kill an animal with a bow, I'm hooked!!!

Holy smokes Jeremy......you look YOUNG! :)

We still up for a meeting Friday morning?

Here is my buck from two years before the above buck. Gee I have been getting a deer every other year. That means this year should be my year!!!

Bohuntr,
I know you have years worth of bow kills. Lets see em.

JDH,
I know you have more pics too.

swbuck,
Post em up, I know you get it done.

how about I show a few I have hunted and some one else was lucky enough to tag. I think I've wore my photos out. These are two of about 4 or 5 bucks that are for ever etched into my memory. there isn't a year that goes buy where I don't dream of putting my tag on one of these bad boys.

this one was killed by a guy in Lehi. I believe his name was Heath Cullimor or something. during the extended archery rut.
after poor shots and blown stalks on this deer and a few other deer that year I finally took archery seriously. If I was going to finally take a big buck with a bow I was going to have to practice.
2006_0401banquet0055.jpg

this one was killed by Chris Cox. I watched this buck all summer long. I had a ground blind set up and this buck was on his way to me. I heard a whack and then heard a kind of groan. then I saw all the rest of the deer and noticed the big one wasn't with them. I assumed the worst when Chris came down the trail and he didn't have his bow. So I went looking to see if I could find his stand. Well I found his stand, bow and also found his deer buried under a pile of quakey leaves. It was one of the best typical velvet buck I have ever seen.

I actually missed this buck at 40 yards the year before.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-06-09 AT 03:29PM (MST)[p]I have some pictures of the last four deer I shot but I can't figure out how to post them. Can I send them to someone and they can post them or can someone tutor me? I know, I'm old.

the easiest way Ive found is to create a photo bucket account.

http://photobucket.com/

then log in with your user name and password.

then go to the Upload Images & Video and choose your file you want to up load.

once your photos have been uploaded go to the bottom of your photo and a few links will show up. copy the bottom link and past it on what ever forum you want to show your pictures.

copy the whole link

Archery is a year round commitment!!

Thanks for the favor swbuckmster. I promise I'll figure this picture-posting thing out when I get some tutoring from the computer guys at work.

Awesome photos guys and gals......especially the ones with the traditional bow.....VERY nice!

While we're all still waiting for swbuckmaster's bucks and JDH's monster typical to get posted, here are a few muleys and elk that were dumb enough to jump in front of my arrows over the last few years. Sorry to those who have already seen them.

What is neat about this thread is we get to see alot of animals and find out that there are some seroius game killers with a bow. If you have been around any length of time you know Roy puts a serious hurting on the big bucks and bulls. But its fun to see you other guys that seem to have it figured out! (Roy don't stop posting pics!) I know some other guys here that get it done! Post em up! Here is last years bull, since we have had a few elk posted.

Roy, you obviously look younger then you are, to have massed that kind of collection.. lol. I am sure you'll add to the collection this year. Anyways here is my big typical with a few other photos.

Thought it was doe. Big herd went behind some brush. This was the first one that came out and I made a mistake. Fortunately I had both tags. Tasted good, but embarassing!

A dink yes, but out of an overhunted OTC unit where only 10-20 bucks get killed a year.

Had to pack this one out solo in the dark when a buddy had seen a lion nearby. A little freaky.

This reminds me of sitting around the campfire and everyone is breaking out the photos and telling stories.

Holy crap! I mean WOW ! What a post!

If I find the time I will have to join the party.

I recognize some of the faces from articals I have read.

I see there are some very dedicated bowhunters on here, good job guys. I tried to post these earlier but they disappeared for some reason, so here we go again. I hope I can add to the bunch as I have drawn a mule deer tag, pronghorn tag and have a whitetail tag for this fall.

BOHNTR )))---------->

I've been bowhunting for 50 years now and it's been quite a ride. I love bowhunting and bow hunters and the critters we all chase. I hope we all take care of this great endeavor so it will be around to pass on to our children and grandchildren. Always try to keep in mind that bowhunting is far more important than any one of us or any critter we choose to chase. Keep your shots close and do the best you can to represent what bowhunting is really all about!

In 50 years I've taken a lot of critters. In the early years I failed to take any photos, then a few in the garage, then some terrible ones in the field, and as time went by I tried to learn the importance of taking good field photos. I hope all you learn much faster than I did as you can never go back and recapture that special event.

Here are few photos of the last of each species of critter I have taken with a bow. They are not my best photos or my best critters, but merely the last critter taken with my bow of that particular specie.

Here's a buffalo I took on the Henry's in 1981.

4a5decd92dab40ef.jpg

I have been fortunate to draw three once in a lifetime permits and here's a Rocky ram I took in 1993 on the Rattlesnake unit here in Utah. In 2004 I drew a Desert sheep tag and choose to hunt it with my bow but failed to fill my tag. I could have taken no less than 5 rams in the 160 class with a rifle, but I choose to stay true with my bow. I have not the slighest regret.

4a5df0873f9cc040.jpg

I used to shoot a skunk each year and take the scent out and wear it in a scent vent. In those days I killed a coyote quite often, but since I quit wearing it I have never taken another coyote. I have had a few chances out of blinds, but chose instead to just take their photo.

4a5df20c48181bb5.jpg

I bear hunt every year and love it, but seldom shoot a bear anymore. Here's the last one I took on the 10th day of Sept at a waterhole in Colorado in 2001. It was the very first night I sat that waterhole and later in that hunt I took a bull elk from the same stand and same waterhole.

4a5df3254d1970e3.jpg

I love hunting elk with my bow and have done so every single year since 1969. Here's a Colorado bull taken in an over the counter area. My hunting partner also took a bull that same year. I have a tag in Unit 61 this fall so if any of you have hunted there and would like to share some information I could probably return the favor on moose, deer, sheep, bear or some other critter.

4a5dfa1b72e147fc.jpg

I took this buck on the Wasatch Front on the Monday after the opening Saturday.

4a5dfd9d0807e33a.jpg

I always apply for a lot of tags and over all I have been very lucky in drawing some of those tags. In 2007 I drew my 5th Wyoming moose tag with only 3 points. I hunted hard for much of the archery hunt and a good portion of the rifle hunt and never saw one really nice bull. I ended up taking this bull on the last day of he rilfe hunt, the smallest of my Wyoming moose.

4a5e004a159fd555.jpg

Last year I drew a Wyoming antelope tag and waited until late in the rifle hunt and ended up taking this buck on the last afternoon I could hunt. I've been pretty lucky in getting critters on the last day. Sometimes!

4a5e01c21d6c57fb.jpg

Although aging has taken a big toll on my eyes, my hearing, my legs, my wind etc. it has yet to effect my fire for bowhunting. It's still out of control!

Have a good one. BB

Sweet post and stories BB. Thanks for sharin' with us. It is great to see the bowhunting fire is still in ya man...

Anyhow great pics everyone!!!!
