My girlfriend and I drew Monroe general season rifle deer tags for this year. She has have never hunted out of state before, and I have only been out of state a couple times in my life and never Utah. We also have very little experience hunting open country, we live in the dense forests of north Idaho. This is only her second year ever hunting and she would be happy with nearly any buck for her first deer. I am hoping to find at least a small 4, or large 3 in the 150"+ range. However we are mainly going on this hunt for the experience of seeing and hunting in new and different beautiful places on a shoe string budget.

I normally would have already done a bunch of research, and had a plan in place as to specifically where we would camp and start, but do to family emergencies, and my uncle being diagnosed with cancer this summer, I am just now finding the time to start getting it figured out and a plan in place. We leave on Oct. 17, which should give us the 18th and 19th to scout, and we plan on staying through the 28th season end.

We will be bringing our tow behind camp trailer to stay in, and two atv's for transportation. We are in average physical condition, and capable of some hiking.

I am under the impression that the deer will most likely be migrating from the upper elevations down in to the lower sage, pinion, oak type terrain during this hunt. I am also assuming that the snows have probably already started up high by now. Do you know if this is true?
Would any of the slightly more remote drainages off the west side still be accessible? Maybe concentrate of the lower country instead? I'm just not sure where to start or what to try.

Any information you can provide me about this unit, where to stay, areas to concentrate on, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Kinda late...
Scouting just puts pressure on them..
If you do scout..just keep moving if you put to much interest on the buck....well I believe he feels danger and he move along plus muzzy pressure..
Just saying..go up early get lay of land look for biggest campground full of trailers thats the spot to be!!
Smacked

Was very dry all Summer so water was key but that changed last weekend . A foot of snow up there (top) as of Sunday. There has been a ton of road pressure with the ATV Jamboree, muzzy hunt, bow hunt, hang gliders Etc Etc Etc.I live in Monroe and can tell you it has been the lowest deer count I have seen in a long long time. Get off the road and hike for best success on anything decent.

Thanks for the info. I see you got snow on top and more is on the way. We definately plan on doing some hiking to get away from the roads and atv trails.

Never hunted Monroe but all I can say is hunt hard and just have fun. Utah general rifle deer hunting is definitely not easy and it usually is very crowded. I hope you guys tag out but honestly I would rather hunt the central part of your state than most of Utah general seasons.
