CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) ? Authorities in Northern California are searching for a mountain lion that attacked a 6-year-old boy and began dragging him away before his father and another man fought the animal off.

The boy suffered bite wounds and scratches on his head and neck following Sunday afternoon's attack in an open space preserve near the Silicon Valley city of Cupertino, Lt. Paul Foy of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said.

He was recovering at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition, hospital spokeswoman Joy Alexiou said.

The boy was among a group of 10 ? comprised of his parents, two more parents and other children ? hiking at the Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve. The boy's father told investigators his son was about 10 feet ahead of the group when a mountain lion "came out of nowhere" and attacked the boy, Foy said.

"It's quite extraordinary the lion would attack a person with so many people in the immediate vicinity," Foy said.

He said the mountain lion attacked in the same way it would at a group of deer and targeting the easiest prey, that being the smallest member of the group.

The boy's father and the other male adult in the group shouted and acted aggressively toward the mountain lion to scare it away, Foy said.

"He's very, very lucky that the parents were so close," he said.

Authorities closed trails in the area and looked for the mountain lion before calling of the search at nightfall.

Foy said authorities planned to deploy dogs on the trail Monday to track the animal. If DNA samples from the lion's saliva on the boy's torn shirt match any animal captured, it will be killed "in the interest of public safety," he said.

There have been 13 verified mountain lion attacks in California between 1986 and 2013, three of which resulted in deaths, according to the Fish and Wildfire department.

The trail where the attack occurred was on land owned by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, which buys and protects land in the San Francisco Bay area.

13 attacks in Cali in the last 25 years. Wonder what the number are in state where hunting them is allowed.

My sister has seen lions in Saratoga just a bit South of there while walking her dogs.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-08-14 AT 05:24PM (MST)[p]I grew up in that Country and hunted it hard until i moved north about 30 years ago. Two of my Best Friends from High School still live out of town there up top on their own Ranches. One bud, his wife killed, with a F&G depredation permit in hand, a cat that came in their yard and took out 4 of their prize goats and the other friend claims that he often sees more than a cat a day while kicking it, out checking his cattle or what have you.

Sad to say and it figures out, the deer herd is way down in the back country so those Mt Lions are going to go eat somewhere, somehow, on something. I see much more of this behavior in the Future but the greenies here just love their big Predators and won't hear of changing the exiting no hunting of lions law to better able a balanced predator-prey ratio and, IMO, proper game management.

"It's all about knowing what your firearms practical limitations are and combining that with your own personal limitations!"

No disrespect to the injured boy. The lion must have been a nonres Lion, as Cali, only has the cute and cuddly lions, Just ask the PETA folks they will tell you just what the human does wrong in every instance. And the Lib lawmakers drink the kool aid by the gallons. a few people hurt for the sake of votes is oky doky to them.

The author cracks me up when he said it's surprising the lion attacked with so many people around, and then the next sentence the lion attacked just like it would attack a group of deer! What a knucklehead! Were just 2 legged deer to those cats! But greenie don't wanna say it out loud

This was an article in our paper this morning:

CHICO >> Friday night what was apparently a mountain lion paid a visit to Parkview School on East Eighth Street.

While the school is in the middle of Chico, it does abut lower Bidwell Park. The big cat was spotted at about 10 p.m. on the school's play yard, on the Bidwell Park side of the campus.

Parkview Principal Jo Ann Bettencourt said the school's night custodian made the sighting.

She said feces, consistent with mountain lion scat, was also found in the vicinity of the sighting.

The principal said the students and parents have been notified that a lion may have been in the vicinity.

The goal is to have the children and families "be aware, but not to scare the people," she explained.

Bettencourt has been part of the Parkview staff since the fall of 2003, and she is unaware of any other large animal sightings during that period.

Dave Scott, assistant superintendent of school services for the Chico Unified School District, said after the sighting the Chico Police Department and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife were told about the lion.

The Chico police told the newspaper they don't deal with this sort of animal report. They said they passed the matter to Fish and Wildlife.

A call was made to the state agency, but there was no additional information available by deadline.

Bettencourt said she had no idea what would draw the cat to the campus.

it is just a matter of time before another kid it taken off and killed by a mountain lion. They are coming in our backyards and eating our pets. Why? because they have decimated the deer herd in the area and they still have to eat.
I would like to see what some of these elected officials would do if it was their family that this happened to.
Poor Kid just out having fun and gets attacked and drug off. They are saving the mountain lions, the wolves and they also want to bring back Grizzly Bears what the hell are they thinking.

News today said tracks are from a juvenile lion not
any older than 22 mos and 70lbs..adult would killed
child and held his ground..kid was very lucky!

>Lame ass DFG wardens are trying
>to catch it in a
>cage,,,they're part of the problem
>IMO.

BINGO, kinda like giving illegals welfare and what ever else they want....... So now lets catch and move it.

Its kinda like here Wyoming the Grizzly bears come down low and destroy calves. But the solution is to catch and transplant. Then a week later the bear is back killing again. Just wasting money.. And they wonder why Wyoming residents don't want a resident tag fee increase when a guy sees the waste of money..
