LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-08 AT 10:54AM (MST)[p]This is my dad's bull from 16A. My dad had been hunting elk for 30 years across many states. He had always wanted to kill a "nice 6x6". Well I don't think he was dissapointed with this great 7x7!
Opening morning started great. After about 5 miles on Rhino the left front tire flew off while we were going about 20 miles an hour! I looked around for the lug nuts for about 10 min and realized it was just to darkto find them. Just about that time bulls started screaming right next to us. We had not even got to where we wanted to be. But gettin close with my dad was a challenge to say the least.
After about an hour of moving towards the bulls and very quickly loosing ground on them, I had decided to leave my dad at a small tank and go fix the Rhino.
As I was walking to camp to get our friend, I was able to find 1 lugnut. After about an hour and half I got to camp and got the truck. We were able to find 1 more lugnut and rob one off of the other side. This was a rental Rhino, we not even think to check lug tightness.
I showed to get my dad at around 10AM, and told him we were ready to roll once again. He said he just wanted to go back to camp, but I had to check one other place.
After parking the Rhino I walked about 10 yards away to listen for bugles in a small canyon. I couldn't believe what I saw when a great 7x7 walked about 120 yards in front of me. I got my dad and moved about 30 yards down the ridge and stared calling. The bull turned around and came back to less than 100 yards. Most people would think this is a gimme shot. NOT FOR MY DAD!! I guess he wanted it to be more challenging so he fired one shot straight up in the air. The second shot was about 40 feet to the left. My dad then started complaining about the trigger being to light fot him. But the third shot was close enough. The shot actualyhit a tree to the right of th bull and deflected through th guts and up into his lung on the opposite side. The bull ran about 30 yards and stopped, he fired agin hitting the bull in the neck and dropped!
All my dad ever wanted was a "nice 6x6". I was honered, happy, choked up, and pumed up all at the same time. It was without a doubt the most memorable hunt of my life!
