LAST EDITED ON Aug-30-07 AT 02:54PM (MST)[p]Well.....story goes like this after seeing several great bucks this summer though scouting and trail cam pics,(some pics below)
it was hard to narrow it down as to what buck to go after....with some other hunts that I was committed to be a part of or guide I knew my time was limited.......But the decision of which on to go after was made easy when two days before the hunt my brother Adam found HIM! The Freak of Nature....not that often one see's a real 40 incher!!
After seeing him the thursday and friday before the hunt, we elected to not go after the great typical and NT that I was hoping to get.
Instead we decided to spend a week on this big boy. On the opening Sunday night, I was at one point with in 42 yards (Kylor filming on video) I had a texas heart shot and even a liver shot/gut shot but elected to wait until I had a great shot. Well... that never happened thanks to a snorting doe and a bolting 30" heavy three point!!!
After another week+ of searching for him and not seeing him again, and with my best friend Kylor with a San Juan archery elk tag in his pocket, and still one other San Juan archery elk tag holder that I was committed to guiding, I decided that this buck would do me fine, my biggest to date!
He is a 28" 6x8, a GROSS score of 188 1/4 nt.
It was hard to give up on something pushing 40"....but we had a great time trying!!
so if any of you are thinking that their are still No big bucks on elkridge....keep thinking that,
oh and if any of you that are putting in for elkridge archery, and happen to draw next year and want to go after a ligit 40" let me know, I might know where one is hanging out, assuming we don't find him again with some rifle hunters.....
Now we are after Kylor's bull...see you all at the end of Sept.
Good luck to all that still have tags...
Travis
Oh yeah, for those that don't know, elkridge unit is in southeastern UT.
