LAST EDITED ON Nov-06-15 AT 05:13AM (MST) by Founder (admin)[p]Insane place to hunt elk. It was the best and worst hunting I have ever experienced. For those who don't know the caldera please look it up. It used to be the Baca ranch, was sold to the government, and as you can expect they(the government) are well on their way to screwing it up. Hunting was unreal. I seen elk in the 390 range and bulls everyday in the 360 range. We did hunt though! 15 miles hiking each day avg. they closed a lot if roads and areas down for hunting and that was ok. But for some reason the general public and researchers/ scientists could do whatever they F they wanted. We had treehugger hikers that were not suppose to be where hunting was going on (hence the areas closed to hunting for hikers) walk and yell at us from across the canyon. Elk were inbetween us including a 370 type 6x6 I was after, we didn't see that bull again.
We hiked 7+ miles into a hot bed of elk rutting action to have people supposedly researchers, drive down the road above us that we could not use and scare the elk out of the country. We reported the problems on deaf ears because that guy lost his job on Oct 1 when the Feds took it over. There was a double standard to say the least. This place is one of the coolest places to hunt. We as hunters are getting pushed out! I normally don't post anything like this and this wasn't suppose to be a ##### fest. I want everyone that reads this to put them selves it my place and think about what you would do if you had this had happen to you. We are going to loose this place forever to hunting. They say they will keep hunting but I truly believe they are lies. It was a very fun hunt despite the set backs and I had my best friend little bro James to enjoy it all with me. We got this bull the last morning. He was old old. Missing front teeth and a huge body.
