My parents volunteered last summer as camp naturalists at an 8500 acre camp for girls. Their responsibilities included giving a 1/2 hour seminar to the groups about the flora and fauna found in the camp boundaries. They used some of my sheds for props along with pictures and dried plants.

One of the volunteers that cuts wood for the the campsites thought that my parents might want to include this as one of their props.

As near as they can tell the Red Naped Sapsucker had made its nest in a dying or dead tree which fell, landing with the nest opening facing down against the ground, trapping the bird in the nest.

The wood cutter had used a chainsaw to cut the fallen tree into firewood lengths and then when splitting the log found the surprise.

I thought it was pretty cool and worth sharing a bit of Nature's Taxidermy with you all.
