My son was lucky enough to get drawn for an early season Junior ES (any elk) tag in New Mexico this year. The hunt took place last weekend in the south/central part of the state. Thanks to those who sent me PMs with information and/or offers of information and help. With the information gathered from friends and acquantances, we picked a spot and went at it early Saturday morning.
Couldn't get this one to come to our calls, so we decided to try to stalk to his bugles by circling around his position from above. Before we could get into position, the elk got spooked from below and came right past my son's position. He picked the biggest one and let er' rip! A little blood trailing drama later (less than perfect first shot, but good enough to make the bull VERY sick) and he had his first bull.
Best trophy for me was seeing the him dumbstruck with buck fever right after the first shot. He could hardly get the words out! ;-)
