Nikko Sterling scopes

Have a Nikko sterling nighteater scope 6by 20by 56 with a mildot reticle, it is based on metrics couple of questions how many yards are represented by each mildot, I don't know if I am asking the right question but we are having problems with rings ,bases and being able to utilize all the dots for longe range varmint shooting, part of problem is cannot get scope level without shimming by .020 so in affect we are sighted in for two hundred yards but cannot click anymore to go beyond. anyone have any suggestions for a fix ??
