well, i was down in ancho this past weekend (yea, one of those left over tags). i didn't tag, but i wasn't really into it this year. i hiked a lot and saw a couple legal bucks and 1 big cat that scared the ***** outa me. decided to pass on the lil' bucks since i didn't like the idea of hauling a barely legal buck to an access road or camp. after a little hike on mon. a.m. i decided to head back to camp and pack it out. just too many hunters and an over hunted poorly managed area. ancho used to be a really nice area.(?)
well, i get to camp and was asked if i saw the g&f decoy down the road. they ticketed one of the guys from our camp for hunting w/out a license. he actually had a lion tag but when he saw the decoys he put his scope on them. i was told that he didn't shoot but g&f said that if he wasn't illegaly hunting deer he should not have put his scope on them. sounds like bs to me, but anyway... apparently they ticketed one of the guys that was camping next to us. he said that he hadn't seen anything legal then bam! he sees this big ol' buck off the road. he can't resist and lets one fly. i felt kinda bad for the guy. he seemed really embarrassed and ashamed.
i get on my atv, cruise down the road and sure enough i see the decoy. i pull onto a small road across from the decoy (40 + yards, accross the road, on a different road and i stand neer some trees so that no one from the main road can see me) and pull out my camera (i left my rifle back at camp). i snap one picture and then get dusted by a g&f truck. 2 guys get out, ask for my license and ask me where i hid my rifle. they thought that i was going to shoot at the decoys! i had to argue w/ them for a while before they let me go w/ a warning. i acted like i thought it was a real deer and not a decoy and i reminded them that i was just taking pictures and not shooting since i didn't have a rifle.
anyway. just thought that i would share my deer hunting experience w/ you. i am glad that g&f was out because of all of the hunters out there, but i think that a better use of their time would be to better manage some of our units.
good luck to everybody who still has a hunt or two left.
