Gus? first hunt was a quick fun hunt! Hit the road Friday for NE New Mexico, skipping school and hitting the road for the 5 hour drive. Got the RV set up and met with the landowners. This was such a positive experience, we met with the owners of the ranch and they asked us to tour the ranch and call them with the pasture we wanted to hunt. How cool, there were 3 kids hunting this ranch and 2 ranch tags hunting this weekend but the owners let all the kids have first call on pastures. We saw a number of goats but found an area with 5 goats all bigger then I could hope for. 5am wake up call, he was ready to roll before me, and having shot all summer to get ready it was fun to see how excited he was about the hunt! He has always told us that antelope was what he wanted to hunt more than anything. First light gave us the first chance at one of the bucks, cows got in the way and he was unable to get a shot off before the gig was up. Next was a mile stalk and spooked goats running all over. We were heading off to another area where we had seen a number of animals. Our goat was standing in a small flat as we topped the hill in the truck, a quick bail out and scurrying 75 yards to a high spot with a very cooperative antelope and Gus? first antelope was about to hit the dirt. 217 yards Gus, you feel steady, ?yes dad I'm going to shoot?, ok when BAM?????????????? what a great hunt, thank you NMGF for looking out for our youth hunters! A 15? beauty, can't wait to give the bison on the wall some company!! Gus is 8 years old, in 3rd grade in Aztec, NM
