NRA membership vs NRA-ILA donation

I've wondered if being an NRA member is really what is needed right now (Yes I'm a member) Of course it doesn't hurt, but the thing that seems like it would really help is donations to the NRA-ILA. ILA stands for Institute for Legistlative Action. My understanding is that the membership goes to paying for the magazine (about $10) and the bag, or knife and then the rest goes to all the aggressive solicitation for more donations. The ILA on the other hand is for lobbying and getting the message to the politicians on the State and Federal level. I keep a basic membership current but then any additional donation goes to the ILA. Does anyone know more and want to comment on this idea of the best way to give to the NRA?
