Unlike what a few on this forum might think, the "wolfpack' can kill a few bucks that haven't been wounded by another hunter.
Here's the rest of the story......
I first found the buck during a scouting trip in early August.
Then I saw it again on the Archery opener and got some video of it.
Some other hunters spooked the buck and he ran for deep cover.
I never did see the buck again until the day I shot it.
It sure looked like he could go 30? with the way his backs flared out.
On opening day of the muzzy hunt, just when we were getting close to taking a shot on a couple nice bucks, some other hunters came through the timber above the bucks and blew them out in every direction.
Instead of just sitting around sucking our thumbs and feeling sorry for ourselves, we spread out and started looking around the surrounding draws and canyons for the bucks we knew were in the area.
On Tuesday, My good friend Corby(which I hadn't hunted with since 2014) and I decided to check out another area about three canyons over from where I had been on the opener.
Corby was spotting for me in the adjacent canyon that I was in. (he had already filled his tag on a nice buck)
Just as I crested a small ridgeline, I saw a buck that had me pegged at 180 yards.
I dropped to the ground and started glassing. A few minutes later, I spotted my buck feeding and slowly moving my way. I knew it was the same buck I had named "RG-3" from the archery hunt.
I crawled 30 yards closer in the knee high brush, then ranged the buck at 150 yards.
I adjusted my shooting stick and settled my 1x crosshairs on his front shoulder. Pulled the trigger and ?click? (the cap never popped). I pulled back the hammer and tried again. This time the gun went off and the buck didn't move. He simple lifted his head looking around to see where that loud noise just came from. I must have shot over him.
While lying on my back and keeping my gun held at a 45 degree angle, I reloaded.
After getting back to my knees and seeing the buck had gone back to feeding. I settled the crosshairs again and once again a faint ?click?. I used my thumb to press the cap further onto the nipple.
I took aim again and this time aimed a couple inches lower than before.
I pulled the trigger again, ?BOOM?, the buck jumped and ran about 30 yards before going down. The bullet broke his front shoulder and then fragmented into the offside shoulder, with no exit hole.
The ?wolfpack? ended up going 5 for 6 this muzzy hunt, all 4 point or better bucks.
Which we have either trail cam pics. or video of each of the bucks.
Mine is just under 29? wide.
It's pretty cool to have a group of friends that are willing to take time away from their families to help each other out the way we do.
Here?s video of it on the archery opener.
