300 is a good bull out of the Eagle Caps but I wouldn't hold out for one. That area gets hunted pretty hard and is an opportunity hunt in Oregon. I hunted it one bow season on a general tag and there were multiple camps in every main drainage. There were alot of elk around but they got run into the timber pretty quick. In a week's hunt I saw two spikes and a 5 point. Great country though.
LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-10 AT 11:28PM (MST)[p]thank you for the tips!!!! sounds like i need to try else where then. i was thinking of going with a guide service for a drop camp maybe or something along those lines.
There are several outfitters that run drop camps back in there and there are a number of stand up outfits. When we were back in there we met alot of nonresidents that had been packed in and most of them were pretty disappointed. I don't want to discourage you - there are elk in those woods and you can be successful if you work hard and have alittle luck. However, its a typical public land hunt and you would need to scale your expectations accordingly.
PM me...We have a ranch over there and hunt this area every year during archery (on public). These guys don't know WTF their talkin about! Not disrespecting anyone
Muleyman, there is alot of difference between hunting an area with a long history of local knowledge and coming in cold from somewhere else and trying to figure out what is going on. (And if I had a ranch over there, I'd count myself very fortunate - I love that country.)
ide love to see some pictures muleyman. Anything over 300 would be a real trophy in that country. odfw gives to many rifle tags and allows open season on spikes. trying to survive that for 7-9 years would be a real feat no matter how good the genetics are.
