Recurve Question

I am a novice in the recurve department. Been using a compound in all my day. However I started out with open sights and have played around with a recurve I found years ago in high school.

I am entertaining a recurve this year but need a bit of info as to what I am up against before I do.

What makes up a good recurve?

Can any bow do? or are there better brands from others?

New manufactured Hoyt vs. Older vintage wooden recurves?

What type of arrows and broadhead are best for recurves?

Thanks for any info you might provide

Although there are better performing recurves than others the window in performance is smaller than with compounds IMO so I would advise you to try to find a way to handle and shoot a few to see what YOU like.

There are a few websites (tradgang and leatherwall) that are dedicated to the traditional shooter, they have a ton of info on them just like this site and just like this site most is good info.

I shoot a one piece 50's style recurve and love it. I use Beman MFX Classic arrows with a heavy two blade single bevel broad head but there are many options and I am looking into going to wood arrows but have no real reason to change from what I use as they work great.

Hope this helps some

+1 Bill. There is no substitute for actually shooting as many bows as you can.

Start researching on the websites that Bill mentioned, you can also check out Bowsite.com and ArcheryTalk.com as they both have traditional forums as well.

Start used and light # [>45].
You will not get good form starting heavy.

Best to buy used first bow- many to choose from.

The ILF setups are good since you can adjust the weight as you get better.

Most everybody likes Black Widow and they point well.

Get the "masters of Barebow" vids #1 and #3[ I think its 3- with Rod Jenkins, Larry ?]

Check out (Rocky mountain specialty gear) either online or at their store in Arvada Colorado. They have a ton of used and new bows to choose from. If you are in that area they will gladly let you shoot and handle any of their bows. They have a bunch of bows on consignment from local bowyers. They are also great to point you in the best direction from gear to shooting form.
I feel you need to be a lot more picky as to the bow you choose when shooting traditional vs compound. Each bow will have its own pros and cons. Like what was stated before start light and work up. Bad habits are a ##### to break. :)
I shoot Easton FMJ's with a four blade head. You might wanna shoot a two blade for better penetration when shooting a lower poundage bow.
Good luck and happy shooting!
