We hunt unit 12 first season and hike in about 3 miles to the area we hunt. The elk in that area will start to move west real quick in unit 23 and the west end of unit 12. Elk move north in the central and east portions of 12. You will see some elk in small openings after the first day of two but they are usually moving quick. Your best bet is to find migration corridors but everyone else will be doing the same. We usually hunt the dark timber after day 1. It's not easy to hunt that way but the elk that stay in the area will be holed up there. You can get away from the crowds in central and east portions of 12. Less pressure and just better opportunity. Lots of elk in that area so hunt hard everyday and you should get a few opportunities. Good luck to you. We will be in the same area this year.
