It would fer sure be ol Merle!!

I've seen him 4 or 5 times, the last time I seen him was in Boise with Kris Kristofferson, about 4 years ago.

one of my favorites from him.

when I was a lil pup my dad had a 8 track deck in his ol 62 ford, the ol man only had about 6 tapes
A couple from Merle.
the rest were
David allen coe
Johnny Horton
Waylon Jennings
and Marty Robbins.

Here's another great HAG. tune, great video also,
Merle does some great pickin'.

Not much of a Willie Fan!

But I like this one:

RIP Merle.
You were one of the very best.
I had the honor of meeting him and chatting once at Buck Owens ranch.

Anybody claiming he was the greatest of all time won't get much of an arguement from me. R.I.P. Mr. Haggard.

As the Crow flies he "lived" about 2 miles from me. A buddy of mine was his neighbor. It was cool growing up seeing Merle at the grocery store every once in a while. The woman that recognized him, he would tip his Fedora to them. In all honesty the life he lived and the friends he partied with I'm amazed he lived this long. RIP Merle!!

Merle will live on in this household. There isn't a day that goes by that i don't play at least a part of this greatest type hits list of his, sometimes the whole way through.

Anybody thinks he was the best must have forgot about Johnny Cash.
Merle would be tied in 2nd with Waylon, Marty, George and a couple others.
Johnny was king, some would say Elvis, but Johnny blazed the way for all to explore the outlaw country music!

Buttshot, interesting comment and i can't really disagree. Can't take away anything from Cash or even Hank Sr, Willie, Waylon, No Show Jones, and don't forget Hank Jr and Garth who, with a couple or few others, i think deserves to be put in there with the best.

Of all them though, as good as they all are, i prefer to play and listen to Hag. I'm listening to him now as i opened MM and am looking to see what there is to see, and i do so quite often.

Definitely a classic generation for sure. Not much sense arguing about who was #1 or #whatever. Just sit back and enjoy the music and the stories they can tell.

Merle may have died, but he will never "slowly fad(e) out of sight".

Merle had many decades of great music. Even liked Motorcycle Cowboy. He is up with the 'possum, Roy Orbison and Dwight Yochum for character. Cash had plenty of character, but the old boy could not sing for shirt. RIP Mr. Haggard.
