I ordered these through the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program). They're the folks that were authorized back in the mid 90s by congress to take over the old DCM program...one of the few times the government actually gave up control of something.
The government gives them all the demil weapons and the profit goes towards marksmanship and safety programs. Everything is gone over and test fired before shipping.
There's supposed to be a price increase sometime in January, but it may be to cover shipping since they're charging $30 per rifle for FedEx overnight. They had an increase this past August of about $70 per rifle, so everyone's hoping it won't be too much.
Both of mine are service grade (good to very good cond) and they're going for $695. They also have field grade (fair to good) for $595. Of course, they have M1C and D sniper rifles that run all the way up to $3K.
Ordering is pretty straightforward. Proof of age/citizenship, weapons live fire, and a membership in an "affiliate" (approved gun club, garand collector's club, etc). In their FAQs there was something about DAV,VFW, military being considered "special affiliates" so I shot them an email since I'm retired USAF. Got a response back saying proof of military service satisfied all requirements! I ended up sending them copies of my DL, CCW, military ID, DD214, birth certificate and passport to cover every possible base.
I'm very happy with the two I got, especially after going to a local gun store yesterday!
