Well, if I am rifle hunting I carry a box 20 rounds....and here's why....years ago I was hunting alone, my Dad dropped me off on his way back to camp. I told him I would drop to the creek and hunt back to camp....about 5 miles in poaring rain....I had my rain gear on.....so off I went.....about 30 minutes later I shot a real nice buck.....field dressed it and started the drag...big buck hard to drag alone....
It started getting dark so I drug the buck to a big log and covered it with old branches to mark the spot...then I started up the mountain to catch the road......i didnt think I would still be out after dark so I did not have a flashlight...going up through the timber it was pitch black....so dark you could not see your hand one foot in front of your face.....Yeh I fell and Injured my foot and could not walk.....so there I was half way down the mountain alone in the dark, 17yrs old.....I shot two shots....then two more hoping someone would respond......I looked up the mountain and saw headlights flash as a truck turned the corner....I shot two shots again, then again,....The truck stopped and the guy told his companion, hey stop the truck, the driver said why, just some poacher shooting down in the canyon.....the other guy said might be somebody in trouble.....they shot one shot back to me and started yelling....I shot back and started yelling.....down to my last round out of 20 so.....its not always about how many rounds you need carry to kill a deer.....those guys came down, found me and carried me out, took me back to camp, then later after we wrapped my foot......later we went back and it took 5 guys and a rope to get that big buck up to the road.....1964... Damn I'm old......lasting memories...
