spineless security guards

The sad part is they were fallowing procedure perfectly?? Why would anyone have a policy for security guards to not keep a place secure? If you have a security guard without a gun and the ability to use it why bother???

LAST EDITED ON Feb-11-10 AT 06:40AM (MST)[p]kingfish good question...I think it may be something about that city?? When I first moved to the sub base west of Seattle they had me standing watches from midnight til 8am a couple times a week for 6 months straight...I was given a kevlar vest, a kevlar helmet, and a cell phone. I was to sit in the middle of the Hood Canal Bridge and was to call if someone blew up the bridge lol...

There will be a lawsuit and the policy will hopefully get changed. Hopefully the parents win big.

I don't give a damn if they were following "procedure" or not.. You do not let that kind of crap happen right in front of you and stand there and watch or worse yet turn your back and walk away. As someone else said they don't have man cards. Disgusting is what they are.

Bro in law works security for a big company and says many private security guards aren't members of law enforcement so they can't carry a handgun or use any kind of physical restraint. Knowing they might be on camera and knowing company policy they may have been afraid to take some action. Still I'd have intervened and taken my chances with the policy enforcers.

They were teenagers for crying out loud, not armed mafia. I would have grabbed them by the ears and spanked their asses. Common sense eludes some people.

That right there is plain horse ##### no matter how ya look at it. A commom man would have the sense to step in and take control of that situation. Heck there was three of them not just a lone guy. Those guys have no excuse for being nothing more than COWARDS!!!!!!! Sorry guys but whats just plain right trumps any policy that some idiot could put in place with that situation. Seems policy needs to change but I would guess thats not the problem here. Puzzzzyyyy a zzzzzsss

I guess the lesson to be learned is "Don't be the fashion police in Seattle".

That's frickin' ridiculous...not even a bystander did anything. Where are peoples morals these days?

Unfortunately the "it aint my problem" attitude is runnng rampant up here in Washington. I can guarantee that if it was a puppy being kicked around everyone would have stepped in. I stopped and pulled a guy out of a burning car on the side of the freeway a couple of years ago while heavy traffic rolled by. Not a single person stopped to help or even roll their window down to offer assistance. When the fire dept and police finally arrived they seemed to be pissed that they were even there. I just don't understand this turn a blind eye mind set up here. I think that we are getting too many liberal lowlifes from other states moving in and polluting our ideologies.

The news has been playing the tape over and over again and blaming everyone BUT the little cull who beat the crap out of the one girl. They had the "suspect's" mom on the tube and all she could do is make excuses for her rotten little b!tch of a kid! These are the type of scum who put Obama and the rest of the criminals into office!

Sounds good to me!!! This kind of crap is why I always pack a sidearm when I go to town. I promise you that I would have stopped it and would have everyone of those punks laying face down waiting for the cops to save them.

I saw the video on the news and there is several problems that allowed that incident to occur the way it did.

I do not condone the way the security guards handled the incident, but am aware that the security company policy is for the guards not to use any physical force to keep the peace.

This policy could have resulted in the guards decision not to intervene with any physical force for fear of losing their jobs. Kind of between a rock and hard place.

I find fault with the company that hired the security company. If they knew about this "no use of physical force to maintain the peace". They sit up a false sense of security for the people using or visiting that place. By having uniformed security officers that are required to stand around with their thumbs in their Adam Henry when confronted with violence.

Now you know why I pack when out and about, I do not trust anyone else to provide security for me and my family. I also am aware that most of the time any LEO can not arrive on scene fast enough to provide me or my family protection. Most private security companies are just a big joke and waste of time and money. There are a few that have well trained personnel and they carry firearms, but they cost more to hire and most business will not pay the higher price for well trained security.

I also ignore any business that denies the right to pack a firearm in their place of business as they are a prime target for armed criminals. They can ask me to leave if they discover I am packing or take the option to be fully responsible for my safety!!!

Spineless, doesnt even cover what they are. What a freaking joke, policy or not you think common sense would have kicked in. 3 grown men scared of a teenage girl, good hell restrain the little B#@!@ till LEO get there.

And to think all those others stand there and watch as she is getting the crap kicked out of her.

truly spineless!!

PB, You are dead right about the idiot liberals in this state and this is what we get for continuing to vote these idiots in office. Kids now days don't want to be held accountable for anything and the parents are just as bad. Someone should have stepped in and stopped that kind of brutality.

Those guys are just a part of the problem, The guards and the hoodlums should be kicked in the head. You see more and more people NOT standing up for there rights or the rights of others.
I feel bad that those are "guys" and not women guards. Glad those lazy asses aren't related to me.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

I totally agree with all of you, there will be a lot of damges to come from this... Security guards are not allowed to intervene unless its a felony crime which I believe this is(assault). By that rule they shouldve untucked their balls and manned up and did something!

I looked it up, assault is a misdemeanor unless a weapon is used making it a felony. Still jacked up as hell...

I have many years of security work under my belt, one of the main rules is you don't lay a hand on another person, because for the most part the citizen has more rights then the security guard and the citizen that you accost can sue the security company you work for and then sue you too. Detect, observe and report. Far too many times I have seen new employee's, the minute they put that badge on then they become a G-man, FBI, secret service, rangers, seals. You name it they become it. As far as I'm concerned they should never let a security guard carry a gun as that is an accident and lawsuit just waiting to happen. Then the other problem is the pay is real crappy, so the only ones that stay on are the lose cannons. I was hoping to not have to go back to security work, but having a back surgery that failed and can't do real physical work any more, that is most likely my only option.

I am a corporate security manager, and have been working in the field for 12 years. No doubt the policy was to observe and report. There is a constant risk of being sued by a citizen for false arrest, assault and battery etc. The hands off policy is pretty typical in all private security. The company that hired them definitely know this and probably demanded that be the policy.

In all likelihood, if the guards stepped in and handled the girl, he would have either been sued or lost his job. I find it difficult for you all to fault these guys for not intervening. Jobs are scarce these days, and those that do work as security guards often do so because they cant find other work. If they intervened and got fired, they probably wouldnt get hired on as a guard with any other business.

For those of you that are asking them to 'turn in their man card', perhaps you are overlooking the fact that they trying to put food on the table for a family. Sorry, but I think that's a mans number 1 priority is to take care his own. I guess they could always intervene, lose their job, go on food welfare and then get bitched at for being black, jobless, and a social leech.

If you all want to gripe at someone, then point your fingers at our litigious society, not at three guys that are trying to stay employed.

SO............just WHAT would be the bottom line to having "security guards"....if in fact, they are unable to produce security?

Well that is the point Nickman - these security guards have no authority at all - and really provide no real "security" to any of the public and these little thugs know it. Hence the term - "rent-a-cop" - and no one respects them. They only have the aurhotiry to issue citations if someone tries to ride the train w/o paying the fare. Most companies don't even bother to call them "Security Guards" any more - but prefer the term "Loss Prevention Specialist" and they only deal with the prevention of shoplifting and theft. Even then, there is little they can do - they actually have to witness the theft before they can make a citizen's arrest (in some cases).

I agree that these officers did the right thing in following the policy, but I also believe they did the wrong thing in acting so non-chalantly about the whole thing. Yes they have the obligation to look out for themselves and feed their families, but at the same time, if it were me, I couldn't honestly look my wife and children in the eyes if I stood by and let it happen like it appears in the video. They could have diffused the situation without actually physically touching any of the assailants - they still have the use of their voices - don't they? (Correct me if I am wrong LEO's - but aren't you trained to use your voices first to diffuse a situation??)I think a well placed - "HEY!! WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?? GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE AND LEAVE HER ALONE" could have went a long way in this situation. Also there was a point in the video - several actually where the action stopped and the assailant actually looked at them and watched to make sure they weren't going to intervene before she continued her attack and the guards could have stepped in between the victim and the assailants and not just waived their hands like they did. I am sorry, but they could have done something and still stayed within the limits of their corporate policy. They could have done something - anything would have been better than what they did.

Also - there were lots of other citizens who could have taken action too. If I had been there - I guarantee you I would not have let that girl get kicked in the head the way she did.

That being said - the entity who is truly to blame here is the city - for not checking the policies of a company they themselves hired and are counting on to provide "security" to the public and/or for deluding the public into believing that the company they hired would be able to provide any form of security at all.

I heard an interview the the King County Sherrif - they now have two Sherrif Deputies posted literally 24/7 on these platforms now. Deputies that could be out fighting real crime in that area, but instead are now patrolling an area that has only ever had one incident of this kind - - this very one - in its whole existence (according to the Sherrif). Again - the city requested this in a knee-jerk reaction to make the public feel secure, not in any effort to actually fix the problem with their perceived "security".

Wow those are three of the biggest panzies or biggest dumbasses ive ever seen. I wonder if they thought the radio would break up the fight. Policy or not these guys and the outfit they work for ought to be sued right down to their little mickey mouse panties.

This is exactly what Im talking about when referring to a litigious society. Your gut reaction is to sue. SUE SUE SUE. Seriously? You are going to sue someone for doing exactly what they most likely have written in a contract. Really? You're a regular law professor arent you.

Having security guards around obviously is not as productive as having a LEO around. At my company, we contract through our city to provide LEO's as security officers. That way they can get involved in situations like this. But, having a security guard around is more of a deterrent than having no one.

And yes, they were probably thinking they would break up the fight with a radio. Calling the PD is is exactly what they are instructed to do. Most of the time that will diffuse a situation like this. And lets be real folks, even with a police officer around, its not like everyone is always on their best behavior.
