LAST EDITED ON Aug-21-06 AT 08:34PM (MST)[p]Earlier this month I talked with Ryan and David at Muley Crazy to see what had been found and they told me about a deer that had been found by Marvin James of James Guide Service. Marvin was going to be guiding one of the auction hunters this year and had been spending a lot of time looking for the right deer. David told me that the deer Marvin found was just a stud, points on top of points and mid 30's wide. The deer still had growing to do but they were confident that he would end up grossing in the 250's. I was living vicarously through these guys and would call them to get updates on a regular basis. One day I actually get a call from David telling me that I need to look at a post entitled "Huge Kaibab Bucks" by BigHungDog. I pull it up and read the post and David asks me what I think of the post. I told him that I thought it was BS, nobody would find a deer like that then post a roadmap on a mule deer hunting website to where he is residing. I just could not imagine anybody doing that. David then tells me that the deer BHD found and posted about is the same deer that Marvin had found. BHD has not only described this buck but has written directions on how to get to it. He tells me that it has to be the same deer based on the location and description that BHD had provided. I was floored! I bet Marvin was more surprised! Ryan and David gave him a call to get an update and see if he had seen the deer that day. They then asked him if he had seen a guy on the hill sitting in a lawn chair drinking cold beer and eating Taco Bell Burritos and told him the story of the post on Monstermuleys. I cant even imagine what was running through his mind, I imagine he was shocked that somebody else had found the same deer and even more surprised that he posted all of the information a guy would need to go in and find the deer. I know there were a couple of days after that phone call that they did not find the buck. Talk about sleepless nights, you have the Governers Tag holder flying down in a week and the deer that you had seen on a regular basis has now disappeared shortly after its location is posted on the world wide web. Long story short, the majority of the people on this site thought that BHD was full of crap and Marvin sees the buck again so his nerves are calmed somewhat. The hunt was concluded yesterday when the hunter took "King Toad".
If there has been a 250" taken with a Governers Tag in AZ this season this is the one! I saw the picture today and he is truly a great deer. He is just what BHD described, mid 30's and lots of points. The deer is a 10x11, has a 185" mainframe and has a whopping 65" of trash! It grossed 250" and change. The buck has a weak G2 on his left side but has matching forked G4s. The G4s also have matching kickers. The G2s have 3 or 4 kickers that go out and up and at the end of the main beam there is an extra fork on both sides. It is a completely different looking deer than the first buck taken this month. Its more of a classic looking non-typical. Its not near as wide but the extras make for an awesome looking deer. Again, I can tell you that this deer will end up within 2 inches of 250". On the first deer I have heard anywhere from 238" to 272" depending on who you talk to. Both are tremendous deer and should give any hunter with one of these tags a lot to look forward to this season.
Look for the story and tons of pictures in Muley Crazy in the near future. The pics and story will be well worth the wait...
