The soviets were gonna fake a Chinese attack on Pearl Harbor to provoke the US into attacking China. If successful, USSR could feasibly rule the world without firing a shot.

(at the time, KGB was aware that USSR was likely gonna collapse)

The sub, K-129, was commandeered by on-board OSNAZ, Russian commandos.

*supposedly* OSNAZ ordered the Captain to fulfill the launch code sequence. He refused, and scuttled the ship instead.
