Unit 17 Muzzleloader cow hunt

We have a couple of tags for the hunt on Nov 29 through Dec 3rd. I have talked to a few people and have got a few suggestions but hoping for a little more info if possible. I was hoping to get out to take a look this weekend but probably won't have a chance. We have hunted it once before and seen a few cows the 2nd to the last day of the hunt but couldn't get close enough. Any help would be appreciated.

I just hunted the 2nd deer hunt in 17, saw many cow elk on the west portion of 17. These elk were hanging out on the shady, forested north facing slopes of the hills. The elk were low, but with all the hunts lately, they could be anywhere. Try hunting all the long brushy fingers coming into San Mateo Canyon, and you should do well. Bring some good boots though, you'll do some hiking. Good luck.
