Unit 40 Elk Access

I was fortunate to draw the type 9 elk tag for 40 and was curious about how the roads are in the unit. Looking at Google Maps satellite some of the roads look a bit rough on the west side. Is it truck friendly on the west side? I don't have an ATV and don't plan on using one for this hunt. There looks to be good roads and parking on the east side but also lots of vehicles parked there ( not sure when the sat. photo was shot ). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Fred.

Not many roads to elk...roads will give you a starting point but bring a good pair of boots and a good pack. Pretty rugged wherever you decide to walk from. Good luck

Yep, drive where you can get to without ruining a vehicle and then plan on hoofing it and you'll be fine. One good thing about your tag in 40 is that not only is it good for the entire month of September, but it's also one of the three units up in the BigHorns that does not allow Type 1 tag holders to buy an archery permit to hunt on that tag.
