Anybody ever hunt the unit for elk in September. I have been putting in for a Bighorns tag for a couple years and finally got one. I have done a little research and the paint creek area doesnt look to bad, maybe up by lily lake. Anybody have any suggestions or ideas. I may be able to help you out elsewhere, maybe the Cody area. Thanks in advance.

congrats on your tag. unfortunately i dont know the unit otherwise would be glad to help you. i drew a 54 type 9 tag this year and it sounds like you know the cody area. anything you can share with me would be helpful. can pm me if you want. if you ever need advice on NM or AZ i would be glad to help.

I hunted near that area a two years ago, and there were bow hunters and cattle everywhere. The ranchers don't move their cattle of the mountain until October.

i hunt in AZ and NM so the cattle im used to, but surprised that you saw so many bowhunters, fairly low numbers of tags(at least bull tags). archery season is 8/15- 9/30, think that would spread them out. you hunt early or late in the season? i assume you hunted along the 2dot? thanks for the info by the way, nice to have some local knowledge.

The archery season is 9-1 thru 9-30 no August hunt. Also I forgot to mention at the end of the road near Lily Lake they built new horse corrals and they advertize this place on the internet. So every License plate from other states were there trail riding. Not to mention ever other person own's a 4 wheeler.

With non-resident and resident tags there are over 145 bow hunters in area 45. The area is not that big and it gets even smallier if you're a non-resident with the Wilderness law.

Also starting on September the 15th every person that drew a rifle tag can also hunt that same area with a bow if he/she want to.

This use to be a good place to hunt but not anymore, due to everyone applies for these bighorn area's to stay away from the grizzlies and wolves however, the USFWS stated that their are at least 15 wolves in that area.

Another area to look into would be Leigh Creek in area 46 south of Meadowlark Lake which you're License is also valid for. A friend from work hunted in there last year and seen some nice bulls.

Scratch thanks for the info greatly appreciated. I believe Roedo was thinking you were originally refering to the unit he drew out of Cody, and hunting the two dot ranch. Does his hunt area really open Aug.15th? Also Scratch do you have any opinions or even no, Rusty Bogers? He is an outfitter in unit 45 and I have been talking to him about a drop camp or hunt. He says there are plenty of bulls in the wilderness area and the areas near it, whats your opinion there? Thanks

I have never heard of Rodger Boger! The only Outfitter I know up there is Todd Jones with Paint Rock Adventures out of Hyattville, WY. Roedo is correct the bow season does open August 15th in his area.

I know Todd Jones kills elk back where he hunts, plus I know he doesn't take a lot of hunters at one time. Maybe Rusty bought Todd's Outfitt because I was up there last September looking for Mountain Lion and never seen Todd.

The only thing I can tell you about you're area, make damn sure you're caring the biggest pistol while you're bowhunting because there are bears (grizzlies) everywhere in that Cody country.

Good-Luck

i wanted that rifle tag so bad i could taste it. i think you should have a great hunt.

I heard the rifle season is an aboslute mad house with people. What do you guys think, the elk get pushed into the wilderness with all the pressure.

the road hunters pound the paths but you go over a hill or two and the pressure thins pretty quick.

roado

I got to looking at the map and you're area 54. I know a good place to start scouting or look for some elk. If you are interested please email me and I'll help you out as much as I can.

Bearhunter I know a little about the unit and I drew a 45 Type 1 myself. I know Rusty and he's top notch, PM me if you want to talk about his outfit.

Elkhuntn247, what outfitter did you go with? I'm thinking about trying for this tag in 2011 and will also need an outfitter.

Paint rock outfitters/adventures. They really seem to have their stuff together. great success rates, ect. also I talked to previous clients, and they said they were on elk every day. one elk that would have hit 370(15yards!) atleast one 350 bull a day. But I guess this does change year to year. so we will see how it goes! I cant wait! :)

Are you going the middle of September? How about deer you gonna try for a deer tag as well. I have there are some really nice bucks back in there as well.

I saw a lot of deer, not too many bucks and only one buck that would top 160. I hear there are some nice bucks taken once in a while but from what I saw if you're planning on doing it with a bow good luck. I'd get a deer tag myself this year but there's no way I'm blowing max points on that tag.

Well it sounds like all the areas around the wilderness areas will be packed with archery deer hunters, archery elk hunters, rifle hunters with bows after the 15th, pleasure SUV riders, and pleasure horse back hunters. Not real incouraging, but we make our own luck or oppurtunity is a better word for it. Fortunately Ive got a committment from a friend in Wyoming to come along and film for us!!!! So Id like to get away from all hunters and stay my distance from the outfitters using the paint rock or battle creek trailheads, Id really like to get into an area with minimal human interaction but still hold plenty of elk, any suggestions on access points or do the two above not get overlly crowded? Thanks guys Bearhunter

Without going into the Cloud Peak I don't see how you're going to get that far away from the roads and trails and as you know you need an outfitter for that. there are plenty of places down by the hiway that held plenty of elk the week after archery season when I was there, it's a big enough area I think there's room for everyone if you avoid the popular spots.

I guess thats what i meant to say was that we are going to go into the Cloud Peak, just trying to fiqure out what access point is used the least.

>I've spoke with Todd quite a
>few times. What are your
>hunt dates?

I think the we pack in the 7th hunt the 8th-13th pack out the 14th

He said these are the best dates to avoid the elk being cowed up

If you plan on going into the wilderness area you will need a guide/Outfitter. If the person that is going to film you're hunt is from Wyoming he still has to have a guide license. If you use the battle park trail head you will be total disappointed because that is the main coridor and there will be people everywhere hunters, joggers, horse riders. Last time I hunted in the area it was a zoo

Were would you suggest to start from then Scratch? Pm me if you like? Was thinking of taking a fishing/scouting trip over this summer. As far as our friend goes he just has to fill out the appropriate paper work throw the state to escort us. I talked with the game department today about it, its a simple process.

When does the rut kick in up there usually unit 45.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".
