Unit 61 Camping

Does anyone know of a good family camping area near fishing in unit 61? We camp on unimproved campgrounds with tents. 4wd and rough access is not a problem. Looking to have fun with the family doing some hiking, wildlife viewing and fishing. Also wanting to familiarize myself with the unit for future hunt in 2020 or 2021. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

There is very little fishing in 61. You could fish Gill Creek or Big Creek Reservoir in the northern end. You will probably be disappointed in the fishing though. Montrose County maintains a free campground called Columbine Campground just south of Columbine Pass on the Divide Road. It has a small lake which is stocked and is probably fun for children. The campground is very busy and noisy with ATV?s racing through it, I'd give it a miss.

Your best bet is probably the San Miguel River, though it's flows will be up there for quite a while. There is a lot of BLM land near the river.
