Wanton Destruction Question?

Is is considered wanton destruction of wildlife if you feed all the meat of a deer or elk to your dog?

I would guess there are some guys out there that like to hunt but don't like the taste of game meat and having 100 to 200 lbs of ground meat mixed in with your dog's food would really go a long way in making the feed last longer.

Are there any rules stating that the processed meat must be consumed by humans? Or is it more of a moral issue?

And if it is ok to feed a little bit to your dog, where is a the line? i.e. scraps, bones, a tiny bit, some, a lot or all...?

I would say yes that would be waste. I do however feed the nonedible trim meat and bones to my dog, Thanksgiving and Christmas he gets extra.

up anyway."

Not that I'd do that but it is being used??? You hauled it out of the woods, took it home and it served a purpose in your lively hood...
Unless there actually is a sentence in the reg's for that paticular state about it is illegal to feed it to your dog, then it would be rather difficult to prove as wanton destruction. (in my opinion).
I may be wrong on this but I think in AK the locals use wild game to feed their dogs and it is not against the law and AK has the most strict wanton waste laws I ever seen...

It is only legal if you eat the dog food that your dog would have eaten had he not be fed the game meat.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-14-11 AT 09:15AM (MST)[p]I dont know why you would not eat it youself ? Elk is better then beff Imo. Deer we make some great jerky and such. Maybe better care in the field of your meat ? Or would you rather buy it in a store where it comes from ?

This is the type of question that is better left un-asked. You will never get in trouble feeding a few pounds of meat to the dog each day, unless you try to rub some game cops nose in it. Of course the dog gets the butchering scraps and bones. And if any freezer burns, he gets that too. If you hunt long enough, you will shoot some rutting buck / bull/ etc., that for some reason or another is hardly edible. Not damaged per se, but tough as nails or just not as good as the other steaks you have in the freezer from the doe, etc. Feed the dog a bit each day and put it to good use. No one is going to hassle you about a pound or two each day, and if asked about the rest of the meat in the freezer, it is still there for your consumption until the day the dog gets it. Don't go setting 50 pounds of frozen meat out all at once for the dog to knaw on for 2 weeks, and you will never be questioned.

It's pretty vague when it comes to dogs or pet feed. Just depends on what warden you have to deal with I guess. If you ask 10 wardens you will get 10 different answers. Isn't the law great??

I've heard of people that own dog sled teams whack deer by the dozens to feed their pack which could be legal if you have the tags.

Our local Raptor recovery experts put ads in the paper for wild game from hunters and it doesn't seem to create any problems that I've heard of. Touchy issue I guess.

Here is another thought I had after reading a few replies...

I don't do much fishing but from what I hear and read, it seems to be both legal and morally acceptable for anglers who fish on Joe's Valley reservoir to spend the first hours of a fishing trip catching chub that is later used as bait for going after splake and tiger muskie.

Now taking this concept of using one species as bait for another...what if you use a whole deer/elk as bear bait. I believe if you want to set up a bear bait site, all you have to do is register the GPS coordinates of that site with the DNR. So would it be illegal to (1) shoot a deer/elk, (2) cut off the horns and cap, (3) mark the GPS coordinates and (4) leave the carcass as a planned bear bait site. Then go home and register those GPS coordinates as a bear bait site?

Do we have any guinea pigs who would be willing to try this and let us know if the DNR would let this fly?

There is a big difference. Chubs are not a game fish where as a elk is a big game animal.

At Joes Valley, it is illegal to catch a rainbow trout (or other game fish) and then cut it up and use it for bait for splake.

The only thing is that I know alot of people that catch perch and fish for Macs and splake at Fishlake.

Its being used for a good reason then why would it. I put two antelope in the freezer for dog food. I have a hound and he works hard, adding some meat to his diet seems to keep some weight on him. Who are we to tell you what to do with your game, if you got it legally and took it out of the hills like you were supposed to then use it for what you want.

It generally depends what mood my dog is in. One thing he knows for sure is he can't go out and get his own deer, let alone chase them around for entertainment, that is a death warrant in these parts. When it comes down to it he is really like family and deserves only the best.

So tell me how does the fish and game catch someone doing this? Stake out your dogs food rationings? Come on man.

Illegal...porbably not.

Morally and ethically wrong....you bet your ass it is. If thats your plan, why even bother hunting. Beter yet, donate the meat to a family that will love it.

If you don't want a 'lope, call me asap :)

I guess to you it is morally, and ethically wrong. That is fine, I wanted to kill the antelope but did not want to eat it. Since I spend alot of time out with my dog I figured hey go kill some antelope then cube it and feed it to the dog throughout this winter. makes perfect since to me. Guess i should leave it laying next time.

LOL

Gorilla, It is illegal to use game animals at a bait site. It's in the bear proc. if you want to look it up.

Makes as much sense to me as buying a good ribeye and feeding it to the dog. Guess I'm selfish, I like the meat too much. There are very, very few scraps when I'm done with the animal other than fat. If I can scrape the meat off the bone it goes in the burger/sausage mix... The warden's interpretation isn't near so important as the judge's if you want to challenge a citation...

One big deer, ground, can feed up to 200 people. One elk could easily triple that number. If you really do not want to eat it, donate it. There are plenty of families that would love to have it, especially in the current economy.

The following article has a link that lists Organizations by State:

Things are starting to sound kinda socialist around here. obama would be proud

I think BuckSnort should be fined for feeding worms under cooked bear meat.

Speaking of dog food...

Its not illegal here. I clean out the freezer every few years and anything that is getting freezer burnt goes to the pooch. Save the preaching and moral values for someone who gives a ratz azz...
