Herpes sends rising numbers of sea turtles to hospital
Published: Thursday, January 7, 2016
Florida wildlife officials are reporting more sea turtles in need of medical treatment from a harmful virus.
More turtles are coming down with symptoms of fibropapillomatosis, a herpes virus specific to sea turtles, local officials say.
Bette Zirkelbach, manager of the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Fla., said the hospital is seeing more cases of the virus in young green sea turtles. The hospital took in 172 sea turtles last year, almost double what it saw in 2014.
The rising numbers may be because of increased pollution and farm runoff, Zirkelbach said.
"Sea turtles are a canary in the coal mine of sort in our oceans," Zirkelbach said. "In the process of saving one of the Earth's most time-honored creatures, we may just be saving ourselves, too."
Zirkelbach said educational programs are also helping residents learn to bring sea turtles to the turtle hospital (William Axford, KeysInfoNet/Miami Herald, Jan. 7). -- SP
