Well, here he is. After 8 straight days of hard hunting, few bugles, and few bulls this bull walked directly under my stand at 6 yards at 11:30 in the morning. Here is the story.
This was a tough hunt. I have been scouting the area where I had shot the bull since April. I had my tree stand and trail camera set up over a wallow that was being heavily used. I had sat the wallow twice before shooting this bull with no luck. Yesterday we were hunting the same area. We only heard two bugles and hadn't seen any elk. It was 10:00 and we were only about 200 yards under my stand and my dad said "let's go sit your tree stand til noon." I almost said no because I was so exhausted. I hadn't taken a break in 8 days. I decided to sit the wallow. I climbed up in the stand at about 10:45. Only 30 minutes went by and I was ready to get out. The sun was beating on my face and it was freakin hot! I stood up turned around and decided I was going to carve my name into the tree and get out. I got the D, the E and half of the R carved when I heard something walking behind my stand. I grabbed my bow and as I looked behind me this nice 6 point bull was walking right to me.I think he was coming in to wallow a bit to cool off. The I turned the way I thought he was going to walk out and the bull walked the opposite way and came up right behind me. Now I'm facing the wrong way in my stand. I turned my head and looked back at the bull and he was looking the other direction. I slowly turned around in the stand until I was facing the bull. I could tell the tell was looking towards my dad and brother where they were sitting. The bull was blocked by some trees and I couldn't get a shot. All of a sudden the bull turned to head back down into the pines... I drew my bow put the pin on right behind the shoulder as he was walking and let the arrow fly! I saw the arrow sink deep behind the shoulder. Not even ten seconds later I heard a loud crash. I figured the bull went down. I climed out of my stand and waved my brother and dad over. We decided to hike out, get lunch and give it a couple of hours. I was confident the bull was down. When we arrived back where I had shot him I found part of the arrow 30 yards away. It was covered in bright red blood and bubbles. We followed the blood trail down the hill.. There he was not more that 60 yards from where I shot him. I couldn't be more happy with this bull. I worked my butt off for him. I think he's a great archery bull. Thanks to my dad, brother and friend Cody for helping pack the beast off the mountain.
