I noticed this year in the proclamation that you cannot take an any bull within the extended area until Sept. 13th to Nov. 30th. From Aug 16th until Sept. 13th you can only take a spike if I am reading it correctly. This has changed from years prior. It looks like if you are hunting the extended area on the opener it will be spike only.

Unless there has been a change to the spike / any bull hunt units that I'm not aware of you have never been able to legally harvest an any bull in a spike unit before the extended season begins. But regardless as you say you cannot do it now.
