What if you cant use a tag?

So, my buddy drew archery lope in 17b(?) and archery bull in 22 this fall (heck of a problem eh?). The summer has been nuts for his business, so he hasn't scouted at all. Further, if he chases goats around the desert for 2 weeks, he'll lose the scouting time for elk in mid Sept.

We were talkin the other night, and he would hate to have 2 crappy hunts. He'd rather do one or the other, and not waste 2 tags.

I believe you can turn your tag back in to G&F (saving your points) in some other states; but can you in AZ? If he decides not to use the lope tag, is he limited to just donating it and losing all his points?

He can only donate the tag to his minor child or to HOAL, Hunt of a Lifetime. Either way he loses points. No other options I'm aware of.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-07-09 AT 03:33PM (MST)[p]I sure wouldn't waste either tag. The Antelope tag is probably harder to draw. It took me 32 years to draw Antelope here in Az. The flip side is that Antelope are fairly easy to hunt based on the terrain they live in. If it was my problem I would scout for Elk when possible and hunt the opening weekend for Antelope without scouting them. He should be able to wrap up an Antelope without spending to much time at it then focus on a quality Elk hunt. JMHO. Never mind what I have to say. I just noticed the Antelope hunt is Archery also.

hahaha, tagattracter, that's funny..."..just noticed the Antelope hunt is Archery..."

Well, i'll talk to him I suppose and see what he's gonna do. It just hurts me to see 2 tags like that not be utilized to their fullest. It's not his fault, it's just been a crazy summer for him. Now he's sittin there with 2 golden tickets, and has to work 70 hours next week!

I drew a 'lope tage in 18B last year and was only able to scout for one full day before the hunt. Took a nice buck opening morning at 9:30 AM. But of course that was rifle and getting close enough for archery is a different story. I guess the reason I would try though is we glassed up two different bucks opening morning in an area I had not scouted before so, they are not terribly hard to find, and "chasing" them around with a bow sounds like fun even if you don't get one.

sagebrush PMd me with a couple of good points. My buddy drew archery bull in the rut (hopefully). Considering it's the rut, the bulls will be screamin their heads off, and going nuts; so there wont be much use in trying to scout/pattern them. We know the area; but just don't know the bull activity.....which will be unpredictable at best.

So, we'll concentrate on the lopes and see if he can't fling an arrow or two. I have a feeling we'll be trying every trick in the book; but it should be fun regardless.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-09 AT 12:30PM (MST)[p]Whatever you do, don't let this tag go to waste. HOAL would like to have it, so a seriously or terminal ill kid could experience the thrill of the hunt.

Please consider donating that tag to us. We have been doing these kinds of hunts in Arizona for a long time, and I assure you, the tag will be well used.

Thanks,

Thanks Don, I appreciate the post. I get a lump in my throat everytime I think about what you guys do at HOAL. I had mentioned donating at least one of the tags to him before, and will follow up with him tomorrow night.

Sent you a PM
