Whats the chance?

Since I struck out on an elk tag in NM I was wondering about the over the counter elk tags in Southern CO. Is there a chance a busting a bull or is it a shot in the dark? I need to chase elk this year and just looking for something other than NM. Help!

Depends on how much you want to work. If you start doing research on an OTC area there now and dedicating yourself to hunting hard (getting away from roads, hunting all day, etc . . .), then it's not just a shot in the dark!

As a general rule, Over the Counter (OTC) units are marginal. But, the Grand Mesa (Unit41 and others) is a OTC unit...and my friend shot a dandy of a 6x6 in it. A girl at work, his son has a honey-hole up there somewheres. So, my point, all units have hot-spots in them.

But, shoot the first legal bull that you see in an OTC unit.

Many OTC units are among the highest elk population units in the state and have very good hunting. Of course, hunting pressure limits the trophy quality in those areas. You can check the DOW's website for kill statistics.

Thanks for the input guys. I was thinking about an archery elk hunt and don't mind hitting it hard. I just need to chase the bugle boys. I have other hunts but elk is at the top of my list. What units would be the best to look at?
