Winter kill

Hey Guys n Gals, I am in NE Oregon, and we are getting ALOT of snow, and winter is just starting. What seems to kill the elk/deer is when we get alot of snow, warms up...rains, then freezes a layer of icy crust. Then it gets really cold.....well, thats what is going on here so far. I have not seen any casualties yet, as their winter grounds are not that bad yet.
Whats everyone elses situations across the west?
