back in the eighties I was doing some yard-work and heard a noise that sounded like a freight train coming down the County road..finally saw Corsair hauling ass just about 100 ft above the telephone poles..he was headed to Reno for the Air Show.. I waved he waved back,,

Those early pilots were amazingly brave people. They got little to no respect in the war from ground forces but in reality they had giant balls and changed the course of the war.

It was not uncommon to be trying to deliver a payload with literally thousands of people shooting every weapon they had at you specifically and several fighters chasing you.
