LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-06 AT 06:21PM (MST)[p]I grew up in Wyo and some of my family still lives there. 5 of us drew NR tags and headed up for the week with 10 total tags and high hopes. The week started off slow as we struggled to find the elk. Weird year in Wyo with the early snow, warming, snow, etc. On Tues. one of group shot a dandy 320-330 class bull (pics to come - need to get some and permission). With 10 tags, that was sweet to see a good bull, but still had nine to go.
Then... the 3 day craziness began...
Thurs. we finally found a few and got another good 5x6, rag and a spike (again- hopefully pics to come). We were thrilled to find a few more elk and some shootin'!
Friday we decided to try a little pocket where we thought a few bulls might lock into. My brother in law walked into the trees and 2 dandy bulls stood up - 20 yards (of course he already shot a spike!). One crashed the hill and the other ran out towards me. By that night we taking out my bull. He's a heck of a 5x5 and grosses 300+ as just a 5. Awesome beams and deceivingly wide. I can't stop staring at his back end!
Next morning, we woke up and hoped to cut the other bull as well. He looked really good a long ways away! We had a decent idea where he might go, so we gave it a shot. Sat. morning we set up a game plan and attacked. Before long, shots fired, buddy shoots a rag bull (first elk! )
As they begin to work on that elk, the draw erupts with elk. Before long, another buddy shoots and is running down to his first elk. JD had ONE day and was hoping to just shoot a cow and low and behold out walks a 6! JD is still on cloud nine. He is ruined for life now!
I walk down to help JD and it wasn't long before I hear more shots. My dad hollers to get over there and I about passed out. Wyoming's general hunt is great, but never thought we would stumble into this guy.
He goes about 340. I can't stop throwing the tape on it and making sure. He's a little narrow, but his mass and fronts are flat wonderful. My brother in law walked up and just celebrated. We had found the other big ol' boy that he jumped at 20 yards with my bull the night before!
What a crazy few days. Before we knew it 8 of 10 tags were filled, all with bulls. 5 dandies on the ground with high hopes of 2 more. The last two tags might get filled in the next few days and I will update the post if they do.
What a great hunt. Good times with family and friends and some crazy success. Again, if I get pics from the other bulls and permission, I'll post some more.
Here are some more pics of the 3 bulls from Fri/Sat. Enjoy...
