LAST EDITED ON Mar-15-06 AT 07:23PM (MST)[p]im in the same hunt as you rackmaster 102 spcl. im looking for the deer tag to match my unit 30 elk tag i drew this year.
Ya that Elk tag is great!
I seen nice Bulls there! Did ya do A SPEED GOAT also?
Ever been their before?
YOU ALREADY HAVE THE LUCK!!!
However I feel unit 30 is not a lifetime tag! hard to draw
yes but unit 31 is the toughest to draw(number one in the state) but easy to hunt!
30 is nice for sure but it can a bit tougher(steeper, more remote areas, hunting pressure)!

I'm betting that area 102 type 1 for deer will be around 2% draw odds, as Garth picked that as the #1 unit.
I went with 101 type 1 special deer, and 93 type 1 special antelope. Of course, I already beat the steep odds with my area 100 elk tag (4.74%), so if I don't draw it's no big deal.
Funny I hadnt paid much attention to the Rock Springs area for along time, I grew up in Wyoming and used to hunt 57 and 58 for antelope all the time as a resident, never really saw many big muley bucks down there, then I was looking at a big buck contest put on by a Rock Springs car dealership and was blown away at the quality of deer coming out of 101 and 102, thought I had a little secret going but I guess in this day and age there isnt such and thing especially with guys like Garth Carter around, always thought there should be big bucks down there, I guess things change. By making it a draw only area for residents and non-residents alike must have really bumped up the quality, man I wish I could draw that area I know it like the back of my hand. Oh well on to the next one.
YA ITS COOL IN 102 LOTS OF GAME!
I was lucky a bunch of times to draw(not elk!)it!
I was not aware of a magazine article on it...
I just know it and want to hunt it every two years or so!

I spend a lot of time in 102 and if you draw its a hard hunt but theres some great bucks out there. I only live about 5 mins away . I put in for it but i don't care if draw, i can hunt g and h every year .
I wish i could get a unit 100 elk tag, maybe this year...
LAST EDITED ON Mar-20-06 AT 10:32AM (MST)[p]This is my first western hunt and i put in for a general on Region J.... and looks like im the only one lol. Im gonna be hunting unit 74 specifically b/c thats where the land i get to hunt is. Anybody else ever hunted region j or unit 74. I understand its almost entirely private land so i dont figure too many people have hunted it.
Same as every year
102 Special for Deer, didn't realize Garth had rated it so high. I looked at the west side of the Bighorns but said oh well.
100 for elk=no tag for me but a PP and am waiting on my moose tag for area 1.
Good luck finding a place someone else hasn't already hunted. If you are hunting on a private ranch you should do alright provided the property holds deer in the first place. I hunted area 73 two times in 2000 and 2002. We hunted in the NF and saw several deer in 2000 and went 2 for 3. Nothing big, one was a decent 4 X 4. Went back to the same spot the next year and saw very few deer and little sign. All the public land in Region J gets hunted pretty hard. One reason is that there are always leftover licenses so a lot of people like myself who don't draw in the first application but still want to hunt will get the leftover license. I've never hunted area 74.

There is No region D any more. It is now W.
I saw a few guys went with region D? Did you not read the application? There is no more D. It is W. It appears that they made K smaller too. I don't remember which one but either 82, or 84 is now a LE tag instead of a general. I went with 101 type 1 special tag.
