Wyoming Unit 89? Rattlesnake Hills Help!

Has anyone hunted this unit or does anyone know about the trophy quality available? Some friends and I are looking to hunt this area and we were told that there are a lot of deer with a 50 to 100 buck to doe ratio. Is that true? What kind of quality can a guy expect to see? What about the archery hunt? Any help would be appreciated!

Jason, first off you should check the Wyoming Game & Fish Dept. web sites to see what your draw odds are for that area. In the past, they would only issue less then 200 tags for area #89.
If the odds are favorable, try checking with the local warden for general infro about herd condition. You can call the Cheyenne G&F office for infro on the local warden. Most have a public phone number to make contact.

I wonder why they call it Rattlesnake hill. LOL

I have already done the basic research I spoke with the game warden and the biologist. I just wanted some other opinions from hardcore MM guys. Thanks for the info. Can a guy expect to see a lot of deer in the 160-180 range?

"Can a guy expect to see a lot of deer in the 160-180 range?" As with any unit in Wyoming, no-one can "expect" to see alot of deer in the 160 to 180 range, and also as with any unit in Wyoming, there are bucks in the 160 to 180 range hiding in the unit. Also, you need to take into consideration that much of the unit is either private or land-locked public.

Are there mature bucks behind every sagebrush, hell no. Is it possible to take a mature buck in the unit, hell yes. Like any other spot, the folks who have access to some out-of-the-way spots and private land, and who spend a heck of a lot of time in the country will probably have the best chances.

When you find an area in Wyoming where you can see lots of deer in that range, post up so we can all start applying...

What I really meant to say is Are the upper end deer mostly in the 160-180 range. I have hunted wyoming and I know the age class is down right now I just want to know if the area produces deer in that 180+ range if you find an older mature deer. I hunt hard and have hunted a lot of new units on public land so I am not afraid to a attack a new area. I just want to know if this area is worth "attacking"

If you are planning on attacking public ground, the answer is no. If yer planning on paying SNS Outfitters $4-$5K to hunt the old Diamond Ring, then it might be worth attacking...

I think you may be confusing this area. I called SNS outfitters to pick their brains and they said they do not guide or outfit in unit 89.

Not confusing the area. Lot's of chatter around here that they would be picking up the Diamond Ring after Spano's family sold out...

That is what their website says. Antelope but not deer. Honestly I would never pay to hunt like that anyways. I only called them to get info on the unit. I spoke to some people and got the info I needed. Thanks everyone!

There is some public land you can hunt. Its real patchy with the public/private. The biggest deer i have ever seen was in the rattlesnakes(10 years ago). There are still big deer there. Good chance when you find a big mature buck you better not be afraid of crab claws. Alot of crab claw in that unit. I see alot of Big 3x3 3x4 and crab clawed 4x4's. I spend a good amount of time in the rattlesnakes and have not seen a 190+ buck in a long time. Not saying they they are not there, they just know where to hang out.
