Hello all, We had an awesome time on the hunt. We were into elk just about everytime we went out. I was there a couple of days before my son got there and with the clouds and rain showers the elk were really going off. It cleared on Friday and when the hunt started we had clear skies with full moon.
It seemed to affect the elk behavior as they were heading into the trees right at daybreak and weren't coming out in the evenings till 5 minutes before dark. The second morning of the hunt was the best morning as we had bulls bugling all around us. We seen one group that we tried to cut off before they got into the trees and my son passed up a pretty easy shot on a small 6x6. He was traveling on the out skirts of a herd that had 8 cows and one very large 6x6. We thought they were gonna follow him up the same little ravine and they decided to cross on just the other side in the trees. My heart was pounding as this bull was an easy 340 bull. We chased a couple of other bulls that morning but just could not make it happen for one reason or another. I honestly seen at least 3 different bulls that I thought were in the 330 to 350 range. It got windy on Sunday evening and into Monday and we did not see any elk that day. My son did not end up taking an elk as he had to be back at school on Wed. Had a great time with my son and I keep thinking what could I have done different that Sunday morning. We were always trying to catch up to the elk.
Thanks to many of you who gave your time and knowledge of the area. billc, 380bull, tomvern85, and especially elkhunter_13, Thank you Patrick. I know there's others also. Thank you all.
