Idaho 39 Late Archery

Okay, I know it's way too early to start talking about LATE archery hunts, but since I blanked on all my draws this year (8 states and 24 hunts!) I now am forced to start researching my Plan B's. For one of them, I am planning a trip to 39 for the late archery hunt. I did it a couple of years ago and was surprised by the number of mature bucks that I saw. However, I was even more surprised by the amount of hunters that I saw! It was just ridiculous on the weekends!! So, without giving up any honey holes. Can anyone recommend any areas or different ways to get away from the "Boise Bunch"? I am thinking about bringing a boat and trying on the other side of Arrow Rock Res. What about Anderson Ranch? Does it get pounded as much? I would rather see a few less animals, if it meant that I saw a few less hunters.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in Advance,
Duck

Not sure where you're hunting, but there are some huge roadless areas NE of the reservoir. And I doubt that's crawling with people. Should be full of deer then, awesome rolling sage canyons with small scattered pockets of timber.

Mule_Deer_Crazy,
I hunted up the middle fork of the Boise last time, near the reservoir. Every wide spot in the road had not 2 or 3 trucks, but 4 or 5. Every canyon and ridge top was pretty crazy with people. How far away from the reservoir are you talking? Is the roadless area in the controlled hunt area or in the general hunt zone? Roadless would definitely mean less people and I'm all for that.

Around all of the reservoirs are going to be crowded (and anywhere with roads for that matter). There is a roadless area North and East of Atlanta that you can get into within unit 39 but not too far out & you start getting into other units. There is also quite a bit of land up North of Idaho City to check out. Once again, there are roads but with enough homework and effort you can find yourself away from people.

The deer are there, especially that time of year, and with weather comes even more deer.

Good luck!

I'd hunt that stuff between Slide Gulch and Sheep Creek on the east side of the Middle Fork. There's as much roadless country as a guy would want to hike in there.

Has anyone hunted that unit 39 during the early rifle hunt? I drew that tag this year and we've found some good bucks, but they're really spread out.
Any advise? I'd be happy to return the favor if possible.

Thanks,

I've been helping you since you got the tag. How have you returned the favors.
All you do is call me and wine that you can't find any deer. the biggest deer you've seen this year was right where I told you to look. What else do we have to do for you. Your next to impossible.

good luck

Steve

the bucks in early 39 are" spread out" move around if your not seeing them and stay high...

early snow can change everything , you might not get past arrowrock, let alone let you get close to atlanta.. in that unit any season be prepared to move with the weather... sometimes theres a reason why the people are bunched up... I wounldn't want to get stuck in atlanta for two weeks , is there still two bars? ha ha anyways good luck .could run into ya up there . all depends on rifle season.

Hey Brian, I had that early 39 tag a few years ago. Send me an email at [email protected] and I will pass along my advice. We hunted high and it was HOT HOT HOT. Most of the bucks were bedded within 20-30 minutes of sunrise each day. We fished during the heat of the day and glassed in the mornings and evenings. It's a fun tag if you have the time to find the bucks.

Brian, here is a picture of a buck my brother killed a couple of years ago with that tag. Just like everyone else has said, hot, rough, and the deer are spread out high, few and far between.

The deer scores in the low 170's with the velvet off.
