Mule Deer Take Two

I am heading to NM on Fri evening to hunt giant mule deer in NM. I will be in an area that has some giants, I have a friend that has killed 3 deer over 225" over the past 7 or so years in this area. Last year he missed a giant and then killed a 227" deer with his bow, he found a shed off of the big deer and it was the small side and if you doubled it and added the spread he would gross 260"+. Needless to say, I am STOKED! I hunted in the general vicinity last season and had one of the best hunts of my life, we tracked a giant over 4 miles only to have him get into the thickest crap he could find and elude us. We were literally seconds away from taking him. I will be hunting in the same area but on a ranch this time. I talked with my friend this evening and he has seen a couple of 185"+ deer out there this year. I have no idea what a realistic goal is on this ranch but I will be looking for something huge. I will let you guys know how I do when I get back on Monday.

Anybody want to take a guess on what, if anything, will hit the ground. I am putting my money on me being stubborn and not taking anything which is just fine with me.

Drum,

As you know the important part is to satisfy yourself and have a fun hunt.

Best of luck to you,

Sounds like you're in for a great hunt, be sure to let us know how it went as soon as you get back.

Best of luck, Drum. I see you said you tracked one for four miles, were you hunting the Sandhills in Eastern NM? Or were you tracking him in the snow?

Either way, can't wait to hear how it goes.

Good luck!

I predict 200 inches fall!
If he's out there...you shall find him!

Good luck Drum!

Smart money says that you'll come home empty handed. History has a way of repeating it's self. I think you like the fact that you've never killed one. Makes you unique on here.... ;-)

In all seriousness though, I hope you get a chance to drop the hammer on a slammer!

Drum has never killed a buck? Is this really true? Best of luck on the hunt, sounds like you have the right attitude for a good time.

Good luck, Drummond. Have a safe and fun adventure. And go ahead and whack a brute. You deserve it.

Best of luck...have a succcessful and safe hunt. Can't wait to hear about the results.

Stanley,

I would not say that I like the fact that I have not killed a muley although it does not bother me that I haven't. I take pride in knowing that I have passed on some respectable deer but I would LOVE to have a giant or two on the wall. That being said, I have been very fortunate over the years and have seen some slugs hit the ground. Knowing that I could have shot any one of them and more keeps me patient. In all honesty I hope that each time I set out on a hunt that I will have the opportunity to harvest the buck of a lifetime. Maybe this will be the trip but regardless of the outcome I can GUARANTEE that I will have a great time.

Thanks for all the wishes of good luck from everyone

Drumm, go get 'em dude!

Don't you guide hunters in NM? Can't believe a guide that has never killed a muley buck is guiding hunters to harvest some monsters!

Best of luck!

Good luck man. i'm sure it will be better than our fun in unit 35 last week!
