Im looking for some information on a few different places to scout out on a upcoming trip to the san juan unit. We don't know the area all that well and we are heading down to basically get a better lay of the land and what we can expect for the hunt. My father was lucky enough to draw a rifle tag for september and any information on some areas to check out we would really appreciate. Thanks.

You put in for an area/unit/tag and now you don't even know how to get there?

nice post/thanks for sharring

If you do not want to apply for a tag for a unit that your not familiar with don't.
If someone else wants to its none of your business.

You know, Paul, the only people who are worthy enough to hunt specific units are the people who live in and around those units. Everyone else doesn't deserve it nor do they deserve the courtesy of info about the unit because they are second class citizens.

*Sarcasm included.

Look at the roads around goosberry ranger station, north long point, around Horse Mountain. It's north Elk ridge.

Look at roads on the Blues from the rock pile to the summit.

South ELk look at Woodenshoe area.

Don't get discouraged if you don't see much this time of year. Get to know the roads and country.
One of the best units! Congrats on the tag.

huntin100 gave good advice.

Throw Mormon Pasture and Sweet Alice Hills road in there. During September it is tough to beat the rock pile and the roads up the mountain and behind it.

You are headed to one of the neatest places on earth. Enjoy it.

One more thing. For really big bulls that are tough to get to...try Poison Canyon.

PM sent....Awesome place. Just don't let your dad shoot the first 320 bull he sees. Come opening morning those 320 bulls seem to grow.

Hey thanksfor all the information guys. I hope to put it to good use on our trip. Just to clear some things up with AyA, my dad didn't actually apply for this hunt, he drew it after returning his unused Dedicated hunter permit . So ya he is about the luckiest guy around , because he drew this awesome unit and didnt even have to waste any points to get the tag(we've been putting in for Books Deer). He is old enough where this will probably be his only chance to hunt a big bull in the state because of the length of time time it takes to draw a tag so we hope to make the best of it. Thanks again for all your help fellas and i hope to keep you posted.

You got one of the best tags in the State IMO
Rifle tag during the rut or close to the rut WOW.
You will see alot of great bulls closing the deal on a good one will be a great time for you and your family.
Check out some of the low area's too not all the huge bulls are on the mountain some stay down low all year around.
Scouting will help locate some of the area's you will see bulls and get to know the roads and stuff, BUT as the rut kicks in those bulls move to area's that they rut in every year it those area's that will be key in finding a good bull if you are hunting the rut. GOOD LUCK

Your one lucky bugger, My best friend drew that a couple years back, I was lucky enough to tag along. What an amazing area, He scouted a couple of times early, don't get discouraged if your not seeing bulls now, they will be there come fall. One word of advice, go down a couple of days early so you can see just what the potential of the bulls on the unit is. We saw a lot of great bulls that would have been hard to pass up opening morning, had we not spent a few days down there before and had a chance to see a few true giants. As luck would have it my friend did shoot the first bull we saw opening morning, but since it went 393 I guess that was okay.

Honestly you'll have a great time. even if there was no elk there, that area is very neat.

Enjoy and post a few pics.

The San Juan is not very rough. For a good example of how rough the terrain is just go to the rock pile and walk about 200 yards south. I think that would only be about 1000 vertical feet. Not too rough. JK. The Blues a about as vertical as a mountain range can get. The actual Jan Juan is flat on top but drops off very fast. Some of the better bulls that I have seen have been very low in the easier county between Monticello and the Blues. I would look in the harder to get and harder to class areas. The rock pile is a blast when the rut is in full swing. Enjoy the hunt. I think it is one of, if not the best, elk hunting experiences you can have!
