Wanting to check out Paradise Peak for elk and muleys this year. Anyone been on top or in the neighborhood? What's the country like? What quality of elk/deer should I expect to see? How hard does it get hit? Any wolves? Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

I backpacked and hunted there last year. We saw a monster deer and took a bear and a generic 4x4. I would DEFINITELY advise to take a bear tag; there are LOTS of them. Family and friends do all the time. We were there three weeks ago (backpacking).

Wolves are not a problem there yet. Actually the game population isn't bad. The elk are there, as well; I just like mule deer better.

There are more roads than the maps on My topo.com indicates AND motor/dirtbikes are allowed. Come hunting season, you may well have more company than you expect.

That being said, the country is great and there are BIG deer up there. You are hunting the winter range for those late season tags down near King Hill and Fairfield...you know the ones that the whole world covets. Those tags actually are hunting only 1/2 of the deer you're allowed to hunt. The advatage is that the deer are on almost flat ground and there is only 1/20th as much ground. During the regular season, the term is: advantage...deer!

Where to go? Get high and get away from the bike trails. Where the three counties come together is a good possibility (a little east). Get near the top of any of the major (relative term) creek drainages: Grouse, Packer, Willow...the list could go on. Gee, this sounds like pretty generic advice, but that's pretty much the secret...get high and get away from everyone else. There are BIG deer there. Again, take a bear tag.

Ditto what GB22 said. With some work you've got a decent chance at a nice muley. Do your homework, scout as much as possible, and get away from the crowds and you should have a great hunt. There are some nice bucks in that area.

I don't know if you are hunting the general season, rifle/archery etc. but the only general elk season in 43 is the September archery hunt (except the "spike only" season in November).

And yes, if you have any interest in taking a bear, take a tag with you. If you spend a decent amount of time there you'll more than likely have an opportunity at one.

Good luck,
