It looks like with the points my son has this year he could draw the san Juan late hunt. can anybody tell me what this hunt would be like for somebody who has never been in that unit. I have horses and am not afraid to scout hard. just looking for some info if anyone is willing.

Thanks

This is one of the hardest hunts you can find. I think the biggest bulls killed on this hunt have been 330ish, and those are far and few between. Most hunters on that hunt get frustrated and end up shooting anything with horns by the end of the hunt.

have heard nothing but bad about the san juan late.

could you please explain to sw buckless why you think your boy could draw the tag? he doesn't understand the oddsbook or the utah point system.

thanks in advance .

thanks guys that's interesting that the late hunt would be that much worse than the others. i have heard nothing but good about all the other hunts.

sw buckless the reason that I think that my son will draw that tag is because last year 100% of people with 14 points that put in for that hunt drew the tag. My son has 15 points going into this year so unless a whole bunch of people with 15 or more points switch to this hunt he should draw.

With 15 points, there are a lot better hunts out there. Including the San Juan Muzzy and San Juan Archery, which he could be within a few years of getting. If rifle is the only weapon choice, don't over look some of the medium units like Wasatch, Manti, etc. since they have a very good chance of being better than a late hunt.. Just my 0.02

IMO Part of the problem with the late hunt on that unit is the elk move off the mountains on to mostly private land or cedar country where they are hard to find. They are no longer talking so calling is pretty useless and locating them is very hard. On any late elk hunt the bulls usually go off and find nasty holes to lick their wounds in. Unless you know one of those holes, on public land, you will get pretty frustrated.
